Soth was lucky to be on the server when the directory servers as well as both forums went down.

I wasn't so lucky.  8(

...back from my hiatus.  :)

Working on it. The network has been restructured again. Frey has been working with the ISP and they have finally identified the source of our bandwidth issues (exactly what I thought it was all along - somone stealing cable/internet signals from comcast and introducing noise on the lines...  >:( - this has been identified but not rectified as yet.)

The directory servers are back up, UAW is up, but there seems to be some intermittance on the cugs network today (probably Josh messing with stuff - I expect it to stabilse).

The Forge is having trouble as our new DNS setup is confusing it, I think it is reporting the LAN IP address to the directory server instead of the WAN IP address, thus its listed but clients cannot connect. This is an issue because The Forge is on the same LAN as the directory servers, it will not affect other dynaverse servers at remote sites. (I just logged into UAW fine).

I'll be working on it today, but may not be able to address the issue till Frey gets back from an afternoon out. So bear with us, all will be back to normal and better than ever soon.  :)

The Forge is back up! (just logged in OK).  :)

I had forgotten to change the CentralSwitchAddress setting in the ServersSetup.gf to reflect the new setup.  :smackhead:

Just let me know in the feedback thread if there are any issues.

I am still getting this issue.

I just tested a login OK. Had to refresh the list to see The Forge, but all seemed fine on the server.

Have you logged in sucessfully in the past?

It is possible that the recent DNS changes have not propagated to your locale... though that does not make sense cuz you are posting here and and that domain name was changed about the same time.

An "nslookup client.sfc.dynaverse.net" at the command prompt should resolve to 70.89.9.148. If not then that would be your problem, but I doubt it.

Are you using a router? If so, post in the "How Tos" forum.

I am using a router, and it worked only a couple of days ago and nothing has changed. Then for no reason it gives me that error message which I haven't seen before. I wonder if it has anything to do with the more recent issues on the server.

Are you using a dynamic or static LAN IP address? I ask because if you are using a dynamic LAN IP it is possible that the DHCP server on your router has assigned you a different IP address, invalidating any port forwarding or DMZ settings. Only a static LAN IP configuration should be used for reliable port forwarding or DMZ use.

Are you using port forwarding or the DMZ? (using both will not work and should not be done)

If you are unsure of how to configure your LAN IP address statically outside the DHCP range of your router then you can check here:
http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm
for some basic info, but it does not specify the difference between a static LAN or WAN IP.
Before following those instructions read your router manual and adjust the procedure accordingly.

What model router are you using? Have you read the manual for it? (particularly the static LAN configuration and port forwarding sections)

Also what is the result of an "nslookup client.sfc.dynaverse.net" at the command prompt on your machine?

(I have half a mind to produce a router with firmware and client software that walks the user through static lan configuration and portforwarding... there is a clear need for it, as the average user rarely reads the full manual for their router (if it is even provided) and does not understand or care to research network configuration (nor should they necessarily be expected to) I'm sure there's a buck to be made here somehow... hmmm...)

I have a Netgear WPN824, and yes i know how to configure it. With this model, and other Netgear models, you can configure the router to hand out the same ip to a network adapter each time it requests one via DHCP. This way I can setup a static ip without having to bother with the settings on the PCs.

This makes it quite easy to have static ips for all my PCs. By the way, works great now, apparently it was probably just a dns issue that took some time to propagate to me.

Coolness.  8)  Glad to hear you can connect again. That does sound like a good setup. Sorry if I asked dumb questions, its just very common that people are baffled by their router. It probably was just hiccups due to the dns changes.
