Is it me or do movies get to pay per view quicker nowadays
« on: June 10, 2006, 09:14:45 am »
Went and paied my cable bill the other day and noticed Chicken little and Brokeback Mountain are all ready being advertised to come to Video on demand. Now it seems to jme that they were in the theaters not that long ago. I also seem to remember in the begining it took some times a couple of years before shows got to pay per view stations.

I mean whats the point of ever going back to the movie theater if shows are going to come out on video and or pay per view soon after anyway. Or am I just imagening it all.

Heh, I had just the opposite Thoughts last month. It seemed that I couldn't find anything to watch, PPV or not, on TV. (well except for DR who on Fridays but I digress). I was so happy to find Big momma's house 2  and Aeon Flux this week. Except, that they where not that good. Kinda boring actually. I really hope that we at least get a good Boxing match or the like to watch.

Hey how you been BTW? It's damn good to see you around again.

I found that the good movies (the ones that do well in the box office) stay out longer for a chance for the few second run theatres that still exist to get show time for them, while the bad movies (again the ones that don't to well in the box office) go straight to Video (Pay-Per-View)

With the number of second-run theatres dwindling, the lead time is getting shorter.  Also I think the MPAA is doing this to combat Piracy issues.  I know there's been movies that have a bootleg copy on the net before the movie even opened in theatres.  Their thinking is, the quicker a legitimate copy becomes available, the less people will be downloading the (often) poorer quality boot-legged copies.

With digital cable services and video on demand, it makes it quite a bit easier to release movies on pay-per-view.

I think they actually might be right in that thinking too...

well It's rumored that FF2 and Hulk will use that exact same plan. direct to DVD/Cable.

They've definitely been getting to PPV/DVD a lot quicker in recent years. I remember back in the 90s when I was a kid, even then it took the better part of a year for a movie to come out on video. But these days, it's only a matter of months. Between that and rising movie ticket prices, there's not much reason for me to go to the theater any more, being a poor college student and all. ;D

It seems to me that they are bringing out all movies rather quickly to pay per view.. but still nothing does beat the the experience at the movie theater :)
