I promised my wife I'd post it up since she is doing an email announcment to the faily and close friends. For those of you who don't understand the above mumbo jumbo, it's stating that I"m going to Ft. Mead for schooling in Oct-Feb and Diego Garcia for a year this coming March. So the Detailer came through and I'll be without Paintball for a year but most of all, I'll be seperated from my wife and kids for the same amount of time. It's going to be different being seperated and all, I really got used to the family as a constant but, it's only for a year and then I get first dibs on what ever ship I want for three more.

As with any new command and situation, It's all on what you make of it and what you do to keep yourself occupied. I guess I'll be working out and doing a bunch of college courses since I'll have more than ample time to work on it. I'm just happy that I had a serious talk with my wife and went through most of the pros anc cons on these orders. I would've never sought them out if she wasn't taken care of and agreable to them. Good thing for family in Hawaii. LOL!

Well now I gotta start getting things in order and calling a few people to say, "Hey I'm coming over what do you have for me?"

I'll put some stuff up but for now, I got to get back to work.

Those high fees are so Punisher can provide scuba gear to the tech who has to swim out the length of the cable to Garcia to fix any breaks.

That's a good question though, how does one fix a break in the cable if there is one?

You don't. Those undersea cables have extra lines in them for redundancy. When enough lines go bad you lay a new cable.

In this particular case, it doesn't go out by undersea cable. It goes out by satelite (Milstar B)

Yeah, but rumor is that US submarines can find those fiber cables and tap into them to monitor communications too.  Think I read that in Popular Science a while back.

We've had that ability for a long while.  The funny thing is that with the launching if the Jimmy Carter, we are owning up to it.

I hated Diego Garcia and I was only there for a day.  The frelling British Customs agent took my porn mags (hint hint) - yeah we had to go through British Customs from our US military flight to get into the US military base...go figure.  Housing sucked...sharks and sharp reefs sucked...but it was a beautiful view...

Good luck and stay sane!

I spent a few weekends allowed to us for some R&R after rescuing a downed B-1 crew while playing airguard after 9-11.

I know what you are talking about but, I'm planning on concentraiting on finishing some of my college courses and some other stuff.
Oh, I do know about the no porn rule on the island, it's also noted on the website under their customs section.  I guess I'll just have to make do.

One year deployments blow.

Here's a prayer for some extra leave time popping up, and for time to move on by quick.

Thanks J.  This actually a PCS for me not a deployment.  I think it's a sweet deal and all since this is supposedly a one year billet counting as two so, my sea rotation is shrunk down when I go to a ship.  After that, I should have a few years remaining to rotate to a shore command and retire.

The thing that really sucks is leaving my beloved back home but in the long run, it pays off.  I should have a bit of leave in between but, space A flights to the island is a bitch from what I'm hearing.  I guess I can try to get Amy to meet me in another country though, that would be pretty sweet.

Ferret, don't they give you a .mil address?  Sheesh, I'm a contractor and I have one.  Can't surf the "good" sites, but it will let me Google and E-bay from work, and I have e-mail too.

I guess the sad part for Diego is that there are no more R&R's to the Phillipines.  I'd watch those dudes get off the plane at Clark and they'd be down on MacArthur Blvd in less than an hour, spend a week in a bar, and have no money to speak of.  Heck, the Salty Dog posted amounts spent and by whom.

Take care, and suck up to the SATCOM folks, we've been known to give a few free phone calls or two (like in Korea, we had an "excercise" where the barracks phones were tied into the radio relay van, shot to our location, transferred to SATCOM, then shot to Camp Roberts for DSN access..worked like a charm)

Oh I'll be getting a .mil adress no doubt,  but I'll be doing online courses while I'm there and because of restrictions for certain e-mail addresses, I won't be able to access my private account through a .mil and I'll have to get commecail access.  So I'll be using their commercail services for other things than military.

Oh I know about that SATCOM guys, I'm going to do my best to get some time on the phones.  I'm not to worried about the R&R flights since there are a few that do go to Hawaii and, I'm going to do my best to get on one of them or arrange for my wife to meet me somewhere (maybe Thailand or India).

Thanks for the advice

Meet in another country?

SECOND HONEYMOON!!!

Ask the kids what flavor they want their new sibling to be! ;)

And those 'one for 2' deals can be a great thing... that way you are able to build up the retirement points and get out a lot faster... and retiring at 46 beats 47 any day.
