Best Lyran?
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:09:09 pm »
What would be the best overall choices for lyrans in early, middle, late or advanced eras in SFC:OP?  Also, why?

I love the CWLP. I think it's available in mid and it's a terror at it's BPV

LDR Ships are always a great choice for Lyrans.  Those Phaser G's up close can be quite deadly and they are great for Point Defense.

Well barring LDR-

DWLP- Turn mode A, great little ship that can failry easily maintain spd 27+ in combat
CWLP- Arguably one of the best CW's- and available in 68-70
BCPP - For all intents and purposes a BCH that can match a C7 or BCF , available in 68-70
(so 7-9 years before anything else)
STL - A DN sized mauler, easily capable (with a little luck) of 200+ pt overuns

In my experience with playing lots of GSA games, people really like too fly the STL a lot.  That Mauler can be quite annoying.

I'm having some difficulty witht he lyrans.  I'm playing them for the first time- lyran vs mirak campaign, am in the early era and can't get through the Desecration mission.  No matter what ship i have, I am always a little outclassed, it seems, and I don't know how to beat these mirak punks.  Any advice? I have an FF, but can afford a destroyer, maybe a DW.

Switch to a MP ship (2 ESG's FF has 1) or grab a DW if one's out. DWLP (again if it's out) should be fairly cheap and is one of the best
DWL's in the game.

MP = military police ship, it's frigate sized but has (as mentioned) 2 ESG's to the FF's one.

There were no MPs, and turns out I didn't have quite enough for a DW, so I got a CL, and that appears to have done the trick.

Mp is actually one class smaller than FF (the same range as F-POL and K-G2) so if you wanted that you probably have to by it "early" as newl ships would push it off the list.
But anyhow, I am glad to hear that CL worked. Early lyrans are really hard to fly, so my respects to you.

The Lyran DW and CW series vessels are among my favourite vessels.  My overall favourite Lyran is the NCAL however.

A few things to remember Clark.  The Lyran vessels for power reasons often need to turn off some of the disruptors and turn down the charge slider for the ESGs.  When turning off disruptors keep in mind that when  you have 3 mounts on the Lyrans the center is typically FX compared to FA for the port and starboard mounts so you turn  off the side mounts first.  Also don't forget to turn down the phaser slider.  Unless you are constantly firing the Ph3 at missiles then reduce the slider to compensate for not needing to charge them.  Similarly move the Ph3 to a different weapon group so you don't inadvertantly fire them when you don't need to and waste power.
Do unto others as Frey has done unto you.

I figured out on my own to turn off disruptors, my battles went better that way.  This was hard for me, though, as when I fly fed, I don't like to turn off my photons, I just prefer to have them that much.  I'm beginning to realize, though, Mirak have some very distinct advantages over Lyrans.  I'm a bit worried about when mid speed missiles come out, as at that point, I don't think I will be able to fight and keep ahead of the missiles, especially since fighting with the ESG requires in close fighting.

First off get out of the CL  :P

Assuming it's at least year 70 (they should be out in 68, but Firesoul changed them for some reason)
And of course assuming you're using OP+4.0, -not sure what the YFA is on the taldren stock shiplist

Grab a CWLP/DWLP /CWP or even move into a CA or CC (whatever you can find that has the most power- there could be a couple of them depending which shiplist you're using- Lyran ships tended to upgrade power, so the one with the most power is usually the latest)

Lyran ships to avoid are the FF,CL and to a lesser extent the DD (and of course all derivatives)
The FF's favoured Disrupters over the esg's ,the CL's were just generally lacking in everything
(power, weapons, turn mode, shields, internals) and the DD's were not much better.

The main thing to concern yourslef with is to remember the ESG uses a capacitor like phasers.
So when it is charged- you don't have to worry about it (unlike the Disrupters of course)
And it's generally best to have a higher maneuverability ship to be able to hit the enemy on whatver shield you want to hit them on. (Cl has a C turn mode, CW's have a B, DW's have an A)

With Lyrans it is really about the power though, they go from being one of the most power starved races to one of the one's with the nearly the best power ratio on most of their ships.
The DWLP (for example) shouldn't really get hit with a med speed drone -ever.
With an A turn mode and the ability to power all it's weapons at spd 24 you should bea ble to dance around any of them- even if fighting a human opponent.
