Time Spent With this Game: What is Accomplished
« on: June 02, 2006, 09:32:57 pm »
I've been reflecting on my progress in chess, and how my SFC experience might relate.  I don't train as hard as I might, and I realize that I need to put in much more time into my chess to get better.

I do not know if anyone has done a study of how much time we spend on this game, or how you might compare it to other disciplines.  Let me compare it to pursuing a Bachelor's Degree.

In college:
15 hours in classes a week, 30 hours in study a week, 45 hours total

45 hours a week X 16 weeks in Fall=720
45 hours a week X 16 weeks in the Spring=720
Summer:  6 hours in class, 12 hours in study, 18 hours total, 8 weeks 18X8 = 144 Hours
720+720+144= 1584 hours annually.
1584 X 4 years = 6,336 hours for Bachelors Degree

This assumes 144 semester hours, which is a bit much, but many people end up with that many hours for a typical 120 semester hour degree, the numbers in class and study work out to 5,400 hours.  Let's call it 6,000 hours, of which only HALF is usualy in your major, or 3,000 hours in study in your discipline.

An Associate's Degree is also at the 3,000 hour mark.

Now, let us assume a SFC player who has been playing this game for five years.  Understand that there are people who have been playing for almost seven years, but I'm using five years.

This player plays four hours a day five days a week.  this play includes Gamespy, Dynaverse, and single player

four hours a day five days a week.  20 hours

44 weeks X 20 hours =880 hours

Five years  X 880 hours = 4,400 hours
SIX years X 880 hours = 5,280 hours

So a player who has been pretty regular for five years has put in more thna the time to get an Associate's Degree, and is closing in on a Bachelor's Degree.  Nutters---People that played over 8 hours a day in the Grand Times -- Put in even more time, and could be at or beyond the time required to earn a Master's Degree.

It's a darn shame we can't get the Dynaverse accredited.  We could award degrees.

Interesting post, maz. One other way to look at is is money.

4 years playing SFC at average of $30/mo for internet connection plus cost of $1000 computer and $50 game is about $2490.

4 years of private college including books and room and board is about $25,000/yr. So that's about $100k.

So you have a 4 years of SFC at $2.5k or a college degree for $100k. Pretty big disparity.

I'm gonna happily print out, frame and hang up my SFC degree. Just have to design it now and list all my campaigns and races played. Put some slave girls on it maybe, mb in watermark form, hrmmm... So much for higher education...

well lets get down to it yes you can call it a worthless activity,or you can compare time on here to time in school or money for school, but can you put a value on being with friends that other wise you would never met or for some a mentel stimulation other than the TV, or just the fact that this is just plane fun and to me being with friends having fun is something you cant put a price tag on.

A lot of things don't make you any smarter and don't make you any money, but the benifit can be stress relief (like sex), or any number of other things.

We are all part of a community and that is part of human nature to belong to something.

SFC is great for folks

I think it can sharpen the brain too,.. unlike the Boob tube, you have to think in SFC.

Rolling,.. the next time Hubby is watching TV mention that,...

Worthless?! I fart in your husband's general direction! What's he gonna do when the Klinks attack? Cower under the bed and whimper for you to save his arse! That's what he's gonna do! Just tell him we're training on Starfleet's simulators for the inevitable invasion.  :woot:

I look at it this way...it's a hobby that we all do for fun.
If you consider time, costs etc spent on many other hobbies, sports etc. it's not so bad.
And like I tell my wife, I'm home, not getting into trouble and if needed, I can stop anytime for other reasons.

Try telling your bowling team you've got to go help your wife for a few minutes, just go on without me for a few frames... :P

"You don't get any smarter.

When he talks money, mention this:
Movie (with S/O) = $20+ for 3 hours of "fun", if you count the waiting in lines, previews, being stuck in traffic after the show, etc. etc.
Maz says that some of us have played 5280+ hours of this...
That's 1,760 movies, at $20 a pop = $35,200.00 saved (and gas, weight gain from sitting with junk food, etc. etc) over the course of 5 years... ;)

When he talks brains, mention this:
SFC situation:  Opponent's closing to Mizia you in a down shield while your photons are still charging.  You proceed to veer off, presenting a stronger shield as your photons finish, then you HET on the opponent sending a full spread right at him.
RL application:  When cought unawares during a moment of weakness, you know enough to stand off, presenting enough of a defense to keep the other guy occupied while you prepare.  When ready, you snap onto him and unload the full fury of your scathing wit, sending him sulking for hours on end...

See, there's plenty of reasons to keep playing this vs. other, potentially wasteful (TV, etc.) forms of entertainment... :D

I just read this thread to my husband.

He got a laugh out of Ted's post.

He thought the original poster was brilliant.

ROFL!!!

To Ted from my husband: "In the words of Seven of Nine "Farting is irrelavent."  He also said, "Now I have to go look at The Life of Brian tomorrow.""

Thanks for making my husband laugh!  ;D

Kim,

I'm with Lord Kreug.  There are lots of guys out there that go to all sorts of worthless activities.  I was at home, and available on short notice.

You might explain to your hubby how much he saved because you were playing SFC and not shopping, or coming up with chores for him to do.

You know, he and I debate often about it.

I have never given him a to do list. I do it myself because I can do it better than him.

I don't ask him for money.  I hardly ever shop for myself, or anyone else.

I have told him that.

He tells me to read. I agree that I do need to do more of that.

LOL!!

I love the guy, but I guess the 12 year difference in age and the ethnic differences makes us think differently.

IGeez, that sounded like it came straight from "Wicked", which is another topic.)

I did appreciate your analogy though.
