Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.

"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics.

Interesting possibility.  I'm not sure that I approve of it.

Right now there are only the 2 major video card chipset designs.  They are also major (nVidea) and up and coming (ATi) motherboard chipset makers.  I don't think I approve of either Intel or AMD buying either one as it causes too many conflicts of interest.

Why??!?  I mean yeah I read the full story but it still doesn't make since.  AMD and nVidia have a decent partnership going on right now with nForce motherboards and AMD processors.  I can't believe that this deal will make nVidia more willing to deal with AMD.  The only thing I can say is that ATI is underperforming right now, and this would be a good time for any tech company to buy ATI.  I just think AMD isn't a good fit for this kind of deal.  I can only hope that if AMD does buy ATI that AMD will figure out ATI's lame Crossfire issues.

I think Ati and AMD have had a working relationship or understanding in the past...and this actually could be a good move on their part to a degree.  If worked accurately it could put more pressure on Nvidia...either that or cause Nvidia and Intel to join in an unholy alliance of sorts as well...
