Possible model thief, can someone check it out?
« on: May 27, 2006, 01:35:16 am »
A new mod has been posted at SFC3files.com: Ilricca SFC3 Forgotten Races.  It is described as follows:

Quote
Ilricca SFC3 Forgotten Races adds either Gorn, Lyran, Tholian and Orion or Hydran, Lyran, Tholian and Gorn into the game. Over 200 models have been created so each races get around 40 ships each giving you a wide verity to choose from.

From the screenshots the models are all stock SFC 2.  The readme posted for the mod gives no indication of the source of the models, who converted them for SFC 3, or if they were just copied from SFC 2 without any conversion.  There may be model credits listed elsewhere in the mod.

I am asking for others to check this out for three reasons:

1: I am a 56K'er and the mod is over 200mg.

2: Others are more familiar  with the crediting requirements for Stock models ported into another game.

3:  Some of the more experienced people in this group know the people to talk to to get this mod removed and can get it done quickly if there has been theft.

I seem to recall that name of the poster as one who had posted a mod a short time ago using stolen models and when ask to remove it did not, but gave a reply that suggested that the modellers were being unreasonable by asking him to.

I am not trying to cause trouble, just trying to help protect the work/rights of those who make the models that I use.

did the person say that *they* created the models, or simply that the models "were created"? B/c if it was the later, that is true, he just simply didnt say by who, but that isnt claiming he did it.

From the screenshots featured in the file's main page, I can spot Thu11's Hydrans and Brezgonne's newest Tholian models (From a year or two ago) easily as well as Klingon Academy's stock Tholian models that had been ported to SFC2 before.  The Lyran models are possibly Thu11's older Lyran models (rather than the newer SFB-esque ones) although I can confuse 'em with the stock ones sometimes since his older Lyrans are based on the stock, so the Lyran models could be some stock models...

And failing to mention any of whom anyhow in the credits/text file in the main page leads me to suspect Ilricca of theft, even though he didn't directly credit himself.  So I suspect him of theft, but don't confuse it with immediately accusing him of theft.

this mod has my Tholian Matrix model in, its shown in the screenshots and no one asked me for permission, KF released a SFC 3 conversion with my permission but this had my standard readme in the zip and there i say that they have to ask for permission to use

Fantastic catch exadvent  and bravo zulu to F_W for removing the file for there was indeed theft involved..............

Models were stolen from :

Rogue
Atolm/Azel
Thu11's
KF
Wicked Zombie
Skinman
DarkDrone
Admiral Riker
Red_Green

Brezgonne
Chris Jones

theft or joy riding??? lol j/k

Question... has anyone downloaded this mod and checked the status of the readme files?  I have not seen this posted.

And lets not use the word theft, as it is not approriate... use without permission is the proper terminology.  As Paramount/CBS by there good graces, alow us to build off there copyrighted matterial.

We should move with caution on these type situation... wouldn't want to make rash decissions without all the evidence.

That being said... if he's guilty... Give Him the CHAIR!!!

I hear ya Fallen, all I saw posted was that someone suspected without checking in the original post.

as for modding, the first mods for sfc3 did not include new models.  Modders AND Modelers are needed equally, there is a balance that neither side should tip.  Without one side your really don't have the other, this goes both ways.

I just wish someone else would play the devil advocate more here at dynaverse.net... I so hate looking like the bad guy! lol

Cheers!

As I think I  said in my original post, I did not check it out before I posted the first message here for three reasons.

The most important was that I use an old-fashioned 56k dial up, and by asking that someone with a faster connection check it out the file was pulled BEFORE I would have been able just to download it, much less check it.

I also never made a direct accusation; I said "Possible" model thief, I said clearly that I did not know if credits were given in the mod because I had not downloaded it and looked, and I asked for others to confirm what I suspected.

From F_W above:
.my answer to all those sorts of comments is pretty much this
"How can you make a Mod without ships"
The modders arnt the ones holding the communities together, sure they do alot but the modelers, the texturers, all the small people who make comments on how a nacelle should look are the people who keep communities open because its the sharing of knowledge and ideas that keeps them going not mod makers wanting the ships

Modders are needed just as much as Modellers, Texturers and programers. It is all a community new ships help allot but you also need new things to play with them in. They do help hold a community together as much as anyone else.

Now the ones that do it without premissions can cause rifts in the communitees, and that is what F_W is tring to avoid happening. How many have left this game becuase of fights that have broke out like this. This is what some of the wars on this, the Taldren, and other forums have lead to games being abondonned by its supporters. Which is why the watching your backs ppl have started, and hopifully correct the problems before they get into the wars we have all seen and been apart of.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

Well, I have to commend you guys on your diligence.  Good job.

All one has to do is ask, right?

May the wreaths they have won never wither,
Nor it's stars cease to shine on the brave.

ASK FIRST, then hope the model author is cool and gives permission. If not, find another ship  :P. Pretty much that simple

You know what would be nice... a master contact list for Modelers... where modelers could update there email addresses etc...  I know when I, just recently, took over a mod, I decided that I would send out a cover letter to all the model makers who's models where in the mod... I sent it to 25 modelers (extracted the email addy's from there read me files)  and I got 22 bounce backs (invalid email addresses) and 2 replies.

I know there is a thread here at dynaverse.net with modelers and there basic model use requirements.

I'm still trying to contact Thu11, Fury, Gafy, and Pneumonic81 on a new project.

Any thoughts on a Contact list???

Mine is simple:
Don't really care, but credit in a readme would be nice. I will not police my work as I rather spend my time elsewhere.

P81 released his work as credits needed in a readme, at least his older stuff here. Anything he made for you when he was doing the modeller for hire stuff is yours to do this as you please (the buyer that is).

Fury should be:
furyofaseraph@hotmail.com

Thu11s you will have to check the release thread buried somewhere in here. I also don't have a current contact for him either, but his site use to have a e-mail link have you tried there?

I just posted in that thread looking for someone cuz someone at BC has a question for an author not listed. I agree on contact information though, as the chances of an email found in a readme for a ship made more than a year ago still working is slim.
