Stupid SFC porter

Ok, I think I'll start a killing spree here, look at how the Max3.1 exporter handles smoothing on meshes...How the hell can I fix it?

Alternate universe:  Khan was banished for preserving the peace. The Genesis device was really a super weapon and kirk had planned to use it on the klingons. Chekov found the Botany Bay and khan hijakced and killed the evil reliant crew in an effort to destroy the genesis device.    Ahh i love it :D The alternate universe rocks.

Use manual smoothing, then reduce it manually. Once your greys are gone, export it to 3DS instead of MOD. MOD is only really good for import, not direct export. I've found that manually adjusting smoothing groups always works best.

OK,  it's not stupid.  If you divide the mesh so that each smoothing group is a seperate object the mesh will export fine and leave your smoothing intact.  It's a little more work but it's not that big a deal.

Well, the last time I checked the plugins for MS3D were open source.  Perhaps the code can be adapted for newer versions of MAX.  Or is that even possible?

It is possible, but probably not legal...someone would have to take apart the current export file to see what makes it tick.

The last time I checked, the disclaimer included with the last set of assimsoft plugins for MS3D said they were open source, intended for any enhancements people may feel were necessary.  At the very least, I do know they're open source.

Thing is, I don't know if it's possible to use the open source code for the SFC, and perhaps even BC plugins, from MS3D, and adapt them to 3D Studio Max.  The SDK for MAX is readily available for download.
