nfineon Technologies has been selected by Microsoft as a development partner for future PC technology offering prepaid and subscription services based on its FlexGo technology.

The German semiconductor firm is working with Microsoft to develop specialised security chips which will support the deployment of FlexGo. This is an initiative by the software giant which is intended to provide a pay-as-you-go model for buying computers.

The final piece that Microsoft needs to get into place to ensure that they not you have full control over your computer.  Now can they force it down the consumers throats?  Not mine.

Not my throat either, while I'm not on board with Linux yet I still have full copies of Win2000, WinXP, and Office 2000.  That alone will do everything I need to do on a computer.  Pay-as-you-go??!?  Oh he|| no.  If I must, I'll buy what I need for gaming and duel-boot.

I'm still making the transition myself but I have a Windows 2000 Pro machine for gaming, my laptop is unfortunately Win XP Home and 2 dual CPU Linux machines.

Embracing more of the "alternative" business model approach, Ballmer reiterated Microsoft's commitment to Software as a Services (SaaS) for driving both the company's commercial software business and helping in its quest to increase Internet advertising revenue.

Microsoft will pursue SaaS licensing, subscriptions, transactions and advertising. "It is very fair to say that all forms of software will have a very important service component behind them, which brings additional value to the community and new capabilities," he said.
