What anti-virus software do you use and why?
« on: May 23, 2006, 11:04:02 am »
I've run Norton's AV for a long time.  It's worked OK for me, but I'm looking at switching AV software (preferably a solid free version).  Any thoughts on alternatives?

I run Windows, either Windows XP or Windows 98SE.

Thanks.

I use McAfee corporate at work.

I've also used Symantic Educational/Corporate at home (Free-legal download when I was a student).  Worked fine; but is a bit of a memory hog.

Now, I install AVG.  No problems, and not anywhere near as much of a memory hog.

I use a free online site -- it will scan for virus -- trojans - spyware and remove/fix most of the problems -

I have used this site for about 5 years now and its awesome -- again I only use the free online scan.

I use Trend Micro Antivirus program, it's not the memory hog that Symantic or McAfee are and it does a good job protecting my computer.  This years version is a lot less noisy with pop-ups than last years version and as ShadowLord pointed out their on line scanner is very good.

Well, I've used Norton's 2002 AV for a few years.  SO now of course they insist on an upgrade with the annual subscription coming due.  I don't like upgrades!!!  It's hard enough to get stuff working right, to then just change it again.

Thanks for the thoughts.  Any more insights guys?

Whatever you do, do not update Norton past 2003. After that, it will disable your internet connection and cripple your PC should you let the subscription expire. Downright evil sh*t man.

I use McAfee 6 on my main PC because it can be fully controlled and does not mess with the internet connection. I fully disable the on-demand scanner and only do a monthly scan. Stay away from McAfee 7 and up, they strayed from just making a good virus scanner into making bad software firewalls, like Norton.

On other machines I use AVG because it is efficient and free, though somewhat unweildy to fully disable the on-demand scanner.

I've installed AVG Home Edition.  So far so good.  Clean, easy, effective.

For those who use AVG, do you cut it off when you play games like SFC OP?  If so, how?  I used to always cut off Norton's Anti-virus when playing SFC OP.

Thanks for the info guys.

The problem with anti-virus and games or any program really is the totally mis-named "On Demand"  or "Auto Protect" feature. With that turned off the anti-virus won't be trying to look over everything that is going back and forth although it will still take some memory resources.

I am alright, it is the world that is wrong.
