Are specialty ships cheesier than DN's?
« on: May 16, 2006, 08:45:06 pm »
Just ooc, have been forced to actually work on Katfight (damn you Evil Dave!) due to my unforseen
extra time (damn you Burt!!) and after having created a true work of art in the map I moved onto the shiplist/rules

So what I'm thinking is the game based around the "leader" classes of ships.
Limited (by account creation) of specialty ships (so droners/fast cruisers/carriers/tenders/maulers etc)
but a (somewhat) open ended system for the Heavy metal (BCH/ DN's)
Essentially have a limit to the number a race can have on ( say 3) but pretty much that anyone could fly one.
And some system where once you lose one you can't fly another.

Basically-
Unlimted numbers of DWL's/CWL's/CCH's

Account created limitations for the specialty ships
This would mean that there are (for example) 2 Lyran CF's accounts created at server start.
Once the appropriate year is reached anyone can sign in and use these- of course the prestige would stay with the account
and once they were lost- you can't get anymore.

However you could (again when the appropriate year is reached) buy yourself a DN/BCH fly it, sell it, buy another -
until it's lost in PVP- then your name goes on a list and no more DN's for you
* And of course there wouldn't be any VP's for specific DN kills , so even if a new player wanted to fly one there's no cost
to their side if they lose it.

So basically I guess it's- do you think most cheese comes from the "special" ships or from the big guns?

I'd venture to say "specialty" ships.

Even then, in 90% of the cases (carriers, droners, etc.) it's more due to a lack of "appropriate" (read SFC-itized SFB canon) BPV adjustments more than an inherent issue with the ship's themselves.  One bright spot of LB5 was that, after some of the DIP BPV adjustments were applied, the droners / carriers felt a lot more balanced than usual, ie, a CL-carrier with a half-dozen or so fighters was a match for a CB / BCH sized ship, and it advertized itself as a bigger ship throughout the battle.

Definately specialty ships including leader variants.  The leader variants are just as bad as he rest.

Yes.. but again (imho) the various leader variants match up better than the "line" shios.

The early-mid war Lyran line ship is still based around the Phaser2- and while the Kzin early-mid war line ships aren't spectacular, the command variants just seem
to balance out better.
