Far Stars Ship Seeker

The com chimed in his quarters
"Sir we're picking up something on long range sensors, might be another ship"

"I'm on my way"

Captain Taels sighed as he stretched out. This really wasn't what he wanted to be doing. The Seeker
had come through the final years of the war unscathed. Then it had been transferred within the Far Stars duchy to it's new role
aiding some of the Klingon teams looking for valuable minerals in the leased territory.
Taels didn't really care for Klingons, but with their own fleets having come through the war in far worse shape than the Lyrans, particularly the Far Stars, they didn't have much of a choice. He could pretty much keep them off his ship, and just submit weekly status reports to the local
station. It was boring, but it was quiet. And after the last hectic years of commanding the Seeker along the Hydran front. Quiet was what he liked.

As the lift door opened and he strode onto the bridge the crew snapped to attention.
"As you were " "What do we have?"

"Sensors are picking up some random energy fluctuations off of a constructed object sir"

"Can we clear it up"

"Not yet"

"Best guess"

The science officer hesitated
"I'd say it's another ship sir, looks like this one may have some residual power levels, not much, but enough for us to detect even at this range"

"Warp?"

"No sir, I can't get a lock on at this range, but based on observations of the other ships we've found, it's the residual traces of another warp burn out, I really don't think they have any way to move"

Taels sighed inwardly again.

"Very well, Red alert, take us in slow, put phaser batteries on standbye ,charge the sphere"

"Aye Sir"

Taels grimaced. Another ship. If the pattern held another derelict pirate ship. This would make the third they'd found in the last month, and if the rumour mill was true, the 12th or 13th overall. Someone was decimating the pirate cartels in the region. Although decimating might not be the right word..

"Coming out of warp sir, visual on screen"

Taels put his thoughts aside as the pirate ship came into focus on the bridge screen. Just like the other's. Electricity arced across the engines still.
"Report"

"Same as the other's sir, massive residual radiation signature from the engines, some disrupter burns across their rear and left side. Looks like they tried to run and didn't make it"

"Life signs?" Taels asked, knowing the answer"

"None sir.. although the radiation is interfering with our scans"

"Very well, have the marines board her, one hour max for search , then tag her and notify command"

"Sir"

Taels strode off the bridge into his ready room. And sat down.Staring out the screen into space.
Wondering what was going on.
Two months ago they had been pulled off of survey duty and sent out here. Here being farther out than almost any Far Stars ship had been , let alone any of the other clans. Every single scout ship the Duke could lay his hands on had been sent out here and told to report on anything.
The klingon's were of course furious. According to the rumourmill though the Duke had simply ignored them.
And had as well ignored the protests from the Homeworld.
So what had this massive search found?
A few habitable planets, some decent mineral resources.
And the ships.
At least twelve ships had been found floating dead in space. Many read like they had tried to run from something.
One or two looked like they had tried to fight.
None had any crews, had any sign of crews.
None had any logs.
Wherever the crews had gone, whoever had taken them, had taken the time to board the ships and wipe the logs, personal, sensor and other.
Then they had left the ships.

It was a little disconcerting.
Who successfully boarded ships and left the ships?

The com chimed
"Sir" the marines have found...something"

"What"

"Bodies"

Taels ran through the door. On the screen was images beamed over from Lieutenant Haez, the marine commander.
This was a first. No one had recovered bodies before..but wait

"Humans?"

"And what looks to be a Gorn sir"

"Report Lieutenant"

"AS with the other ships , all records have been wiped, other systems seem to be intact. Looks like they fired a drone off, but whether that was at whoever did this or some time ago I can't tell"

'Yes, yes lieutenant.. The bodies?"

"They're human and possibly a Gorn sir"

Taels sighed. The younger generation.
"I can see that Lieutenant, where are they, what seems to have happened? No one had found any sign of bodies before"

"There are 4 human bodies and the Gorn sir, the Gorn appears to have suffered multiple close range disrupter hits, as have three of the humans.
One of the human bodies is umarked, the doc thinks he died from radiation poisoning."

Taels cursed
"So we still have nothing"

"There is one more thing sir, while the Gorn and three humans were tossed in a corner the last Human was at the door. It looks like he used a small knife to cut something into his skin. Looks like he tried it on the door, but it wasn't strong enough.."

'Cut into his own skin?" Still Taels wasn't entirely surprised. He had spent some time during the war on the Federation front.
Humans were as barbaric as the Klingons.
"What is it"

The camera panned to the Human's remains. The Lieutenant had been wrong. The human had carved the same symbols into his skin multiple times.

Hic Jacet Arthurus, Rex quondam, Rex que futurus

"Coms?"

"It doesn't match any human language we have on file Commander"

Taels sighed.
Too much to hope for.
Humans
Completely useless at the best of times.

"Log it as an internal dispute between pirates on their ship, survivors fled ,means unkown, recall the marines and tag it for the Duke"

The Captain sighed to himself again.
What was going on out here?

Prefect House, Galntir IV
Far Stars Duchy

Chief Tuuhc purred happily to himself as he walked through the door into the prefect house.
Tossing a casual salute at the guards he grabbed his morning cup of Lir and checked the status boards.
Nothing new at all.
His purr became stronger.

At first Tuuhc had been appalled by the Ducal order. Reroute and remove all police patrols from certain areas, report, but don't investigate (upon pain of Ducal... displeasure) any unknown ships . Respond only to emergencies and immediate acts of piracy.
Really it was quite outrageous. Sure it had come from the Duke, but shouldn't they have told Tuuhc what was going on? He was the ranking police official for this posting. Sure piracy had flourished, but couldn't they have seen that it was always his officers fault?
Everyone knew Tuuhc was a genius, no criminal could outhink him.
Obviously it wasn't his fault.

Things had reached a bit of a boiling point when the Interceptor  had dissapeared. The Interceptor wasn't just a Police ship. It was a full fledged MP ship. Had more firepower than anything it was like to run across, and the speed to outun just about anything it couldn't outgun. Military grade sensors also should have ensured that it could see anyone before they sneaked up on it.
True it's Captain had been a little more adventurous than Tuuhc like, didn't quite understand that there were ... proceduresto follow if you were to survive out here.. Still she was competent enough in her own way.

Tuuhc had been quietly upset, and had intended to make his displeasure know to the Duke himself. He had been preparing a letter to express his indignation when the call came through.
After that everything had seemed quite.. rosy.
Reports of pirate attacks were way down.. actually there weren't any in his entire patrol area. His ships were saving alot of fuel and on repairs with the limited deployment. Overtime pay would be way down. So basically he was now in charge of a huge area with no piracy, and one of the lowest police force budgets in the Barony's history.
All in all Tuuhc smelled promotion.

Walking into his office he closed the door behind him. He was an important figure.
He need to make sure he got his sleep in case anything big did happen.
As he sat behind his desk Tuuhc felt the effects of being transported.. but surely the buffers would..

He materialized inside a darkened room. Several guard were pointing disrupters at him.
He noticed the Duke's personal insignia on their armour.

"W...where am I? How did you beam me here? What's going.."

The door to the room hissed open and a robed figure strode in.
"Chief Tuuhc?"

"Y--yes?"

" My name is unimportant, as I hope you've surmised you're here to answer a few questions, I am rather pressed for time so I don't have alot
to spend with you. I do hope you understand what that means.."

Tuuhc did. Unlike it's neighbors, the Lyran Empire was actually very restrained in it's questioning by police or government. Civil liberties were well entrenched and protected in the Empire. Like all Empires though, if it needed information fast...

" I..I.. I'm always willing to do whatever I can to aid the Duke,"

"Excellent, you have no idea how glad I am to hear that"
He reached for a datapad.
"Now 2 weeks ago you received a call from a person calling themselves "Blackheart?"

Tuuhc went cold.
"NO! I have never heard of"

The robed figured sighed.
"Chief, you have had known dealings with the pirate known as Blackheart. He is a known member of what is generally called the Tigerheart cartel. He is a human. You have been dealing with him for at least four years. You"

"No! I swear I've never heard of him! I don't Even know any humans! I'm an officer of the Law! I have rig.."
Tuuhc screamed as what looked to be a Klingon painstick slapped him across the neck.

"Chief, I told you.Limited time. We know you received a transmission from him. What did it say?"

Two painsticks hit him this time.

Sobbing Tuuhc tried to explain" I... I... he'll kill me"

"He's already dead, he won't be killing anyone"

"Dead?"

"His body was unidentified on a derelict pirate vessel, we believe there was some infighting going on within the cartel.
His last message was to you. What did it say?"

Tuuhc grimaced, still feeling like his joints were on fir, he gasped for air. Still if the Heart was dead...
"He sent me a message saying we wouldn't be doing business for some time.."

"Why?"

"I don't know. Something had spooked the cartel. Vessels were simply going out on regular runs and not coming back.
Other cartels were losing ships in territory leased from Tigerheart and blaming the cartel. No one knew what was going on. "

"Did they have any ideas?"

"No..well yes but it was ridiculous.."

"Well?"

"No it was a stupid.."
Tuuhc coiled back as the painsticks were brought out again
"No! No! they said there was a ghost ship out there.."

"A ghost ship.."

"Yes, I know it sounds stupid but he said there were reports a few months back of a ship that appeared out of nowhere.
Huge thing, Size of a battleship he said. None of the cartels ships ever got a lock on it, but he said rumours had it sighted twice before the disappearances started.."
Tuuhc stopped as he he heard his interrogator speaking softly to himself.

"A ghost ship.. could it be..the legends.."

Then his interrogator's eyes were back on him. Colder eyes than he had ever seen.
Contrasted completely with the almost dulcet tone he used

"Was there anything else .. anything at all? "

"Just..just he said he was taking his ship to another cartel, I guess a number of the Tigerheart were.
From what he said I'd guess the cartel was just about finished"

Tuuhc looked up. The figure was looking down on him with a half smile. Almost as if he knew Tuuhc was holding back..

"And?"

"And he told .. he asked me if I could ask around, he said there were rumblings that the Lyran captained ships were dissapearing at a faster rate, almost as if they were being hunted specifically.. he wanted to know if we had someone planted in the Tigerheart council "

Tuuhc's eyes narrowed as the lights came on.

"Thank you Chief Investigator. You will be returned immediately"

"Thank You..thank you... and I promise I won't mention a word of this to anyone..?"

His interrogator turned
"Hmm? About what? All we've talked about is ghosts and such, there aren't really ghost ships out there are taking their vengeance upon the living you know.."

" No ... no of course not it's just..."

"Good Bye Chief "

Tuuhc nearly cried out loud in relief when he felt the effects of the transporter beam. Normally he hated the things , so many things could go wrong. One little piece of data scrambled and you were a pile of ash.. one little piece reassembled wrong ..
