Shiplist Question
« on: May 08, 2006, 09:37:53 pm »
Forgive me if this is a stupid question...

But what changes can a server detect in a shiplist?

I've gone through my shiplist file and changed only the paths for the models.  I like to see the TOS Feddies stay in the game a little longer, so i changed the + refits to still point to the feca, feff, fedd, fedn... will that cause any problems with other people playing with the unaltered OP+ 4.0 shiplist?  In either GSA or D2.

Server side, there are a few things you can change without requiring the players to get a new shiplist.  One example is the number of fighters it carries, and another example is its BPV.

However, playerside I think there is almost nothing you can change.  Most definitely, you cannot change the model path.   Don't we wish we could!  It would have been very nice if Taldren had allowed you to change that, but that's an old complaint that goes back to the birth of the dynaverse.

However, what you CAN do is change the model that is in the folder pointed to by the shiplist.  This gets done all the time, and allows you to have the model you want to see in your D2 games.

Thanks Herr Burt.  At least all the servers usually run a shiplist of their own, so its easy to get on a d2 server, when I finally get off this Dial-up...

You can certainly play on the D2 with dial-up.  Several of our long-time nutters use dial-up.  Come on in, matey, the water is fine.

Why can't you play on GSA, is it a technical issue or are you saying you experience lag?

I'm on dialup and can play on the D2, however I cannot (will not) play on GSA as it can take up to 15 minutes for all the ads to download before you can even get into the game lobby. Just not practical. TCP/IP games are fine (which is what gsa games actaully are) but the ads are just too much for dial-up, it is painfully slow.

It's something to do with the way I've got the computer set up here.

The computer that I have SFC:OP on is not the computer that actually dials the internet.  I lost the MSN dial-up program when my old hard drive went kaput.  As it stands, another computer is plugged into the wall and dials, and then it shares its internet connection with my computer.  I could put SFC on that computer, but with three other people in the house, they all use that computer.  (They know better than to touch my computer :))

Also, the best connection speed we've ever gotten with the Dial-up is 28.8, and that only occurs late at night, or early in the morning.  I tried playing SFC I a long time ago on Mplayer with a 33.6 connection.  There was so much lag in those games that I couldn't target some people, and some people couldn't target me.  It got to the point where people accused me of modifing my shiplist.  (before I had a clue as to how to do it)

Tell ya what, I'll check to see if I can see the servers now...if I can, I'll download the stuff for Econ War.  I have some things to do this afternoon, but I'll come back this evening and give it a try.  hmm...been a while since I flew a pirate...might be fun  ;D

Ah, the joys of ICS (Internet connection sharing), theoretically it is possible to forward the necessary ports but few have had much success with it. There should be instructions for the ICS machine's version of windows at microsoft.com.

The only instruction Microsoft gave me were for the Internet Connection F-word.  Which I just turned off completely, since there really is no need for the F-word on a dial-up.  No Dice.  On the other hand, I did install OP on the Dialing Computer and I can see the servers...since everyone goes to bed about 10-10:30...I could play after that.  With the F-Word off and Norton Off, is there anything else that might cause some problems?  I don't know what exactly is on that computer, but if you could tell me some of the more obvious issue causing programs so I can check for them, I would appreciate it.
