I don't get it, what is the advantage of using this "Hardcore" 4.0 list compared to regular 4.0?

It removes the X ships, Orions, Tugs, And so forth. Basically it is mainly line ships. The advantage is that players can not select "by accident" an X ship in any given era, thus forcing a more strategy based mission where skill counts over having a overall better ship. for example, someone takes a CB and another takes a CX, both ships are relatively the same, except the CX has 48 power, the CB 38, the CB has 12 PH 1s, the CX has 12 PH X.. the CX has a clear advantage.. OP Hardcore levels the playing field by removing the CX for selectability. Thus a player would have to select a CB instead of a CX given the example above. Eliminates the "accidental" selection of X tech in a ship.

Basiclally is limits OP to Line Ships mostly.

What it does is move the X1 (CCX style ships)  and X2  (XCA style ships) ships together into ADVANCED.  While this is not perfect fix (the game needs another ERA basically) it is a better solution than putting the X1 ships in Late Era which had the potential to imblalance the most popular ERA of play...late.

ADV will still be advanced and if you want an X1 ship match just say X1.

By the way I think the Fed CB has 10 phaser 1's and far less shielding than the CX.

You guys need to understand what 4.0 is and what Hardcore is.

4.0 was Firesoul's attempt to get every singe ship that was published in SFB literature into an SFC shiplist. Balanced or not, if it's in an SFB publication, it's in there.

This includes limited deployment (read: rare) ships, unique ships, conjectural (read: never built) ships, etc. As many have observed, and FS himself has acknowledged, 4.0 is not always balanced for game play. Rather, it is a complete and exhaustive library of whatever has been published in SFB.

The problem with that is as a general use shiplist it includes stuff which was rarely or never flown in the future history of the General War. A lot of these ships are overused on GSA, as they are great ships for their BPV but not really balanced in comparison to line ships which made up the bulk of the forces which fought during the GW. Certain battle tugs and heavy war destroyers make great examples.

Hardcore eliminates some of these classes and instead highlights the ships which actually would have been historically flown. So now at 130 late you will be facing light cruisers instead of some cheesy HDW. At 200 mid you will be facing an early dreadnought instead of an overpowered battle tug. (Battle tugs in particular were extremely rare, since tugs were much more valuable to build/upgrade/repair bases, resupply/repair fleets, etc.)

So if you are looking for maximum cheese at every possible BPV then hardcore is probably not for you. If you want a fair and challenging fight at every BPV where pilot skill matters more than cheese selection, than Hardcore probably IS for you.

There's a problem with the mod that seems to remove all sounds except the music from the game. Anybody know how to fix this?

Humm, the HC shiplist doesn't do anything to the sfcsounds.zip.

I've installed, uninstalled, installed, uninstalled, installed, uninstalled, etc. etc.  and have yet to reproduce this issue.

Can someone that is having this issue, or can reproduce it, send me their sfc.ini via PM?

All the sounds, music, etc. are contained in a non-compressed ZIP file in the \sounds folder.

To update them you must actually overwrite the existing sounds in the zip.

Yeah there are 10 phaser 1s in the CB not 12 as the other 2 are phaser 3s.

Hardcore was done by Firesoul, as was 4.0. If you're going to base anything off 4.0 then I would get his permission first.

If you want to base it off of stock, then I would say go for it.

You do know, You have to be able to quote Python for the Download to work.

hey where the hell is our Bard Hstapath? he would love this my friends.

Stephen

Well, this explains it... late one night/early one morning while staying up with my newborn daughter Jadzia (born 03/09/06) I felt a strange tremor in the force... my fleetmates were quoting Monty Python again and I wasn't there.   :o
