Satellite Internet
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:18:59 pm »
Anyone else have this?  I'm moving and my RF wireless provider does not operate in Pawnee County, OK.  It's dial-up or satellite.

The deal I am looking at is HughesNet which has 700K for $59 a month, or 1 Mpbs for $69 a month.  Is the difference noticable?

Take a look at the uplink speeds too. Keep in mind that satelite internet has fairly high ping times (1000ms or more in many cases), so I wouldn't reccomend it for gaming.

I thought you couldn't upload via satellite, that you had to use a land line.  Of course I could be wrong...

Yea you can, they've eliminated that problem a long time ago.

Dial-up is better than satellite for gaming, the latency on sattelite is hideous. If you intend only to browse the web and download stuff then satellite is probably better. But if you want to do any gaming then dial-up is the way to go.

Stephen is on satellite, they use a propietary packet compression protocol. The webserver log here is full of errors from only Stephen, we have tried everything to eliminate it, I can only assume it is a flaw in the satellite protocols.

Well it takes upwards of a couple seconds to just get the packets to and from your computer, to the satelite, and back down to a ground station (1.25 seconds each bounce)

We do business over the Internet, so the thought of dial-up gives me hives.

Well, now, that depends..

Taking a crap standing up is very army, straddle-trench chic, but I prefer a good newspaper and a few minutes to accomplish all my goals.
