Static LAN IP Address

I went to the command prompt and typed ipconfig /all to get my IP addy, but it is the one for my router.  I'm trying to change my IP to a static but I don't know how to get one.

I know where to put the static IP in the internect connections of the control panel, but HOW do I get a new number?

Why do you want this?

The one IPconfig shows is for the machine your on.

Your router has 2 an external one that the internet sees, and an internal one that your machines see.

The router typically hands out IP addresses to machines on the inside in order to keep track of where all the data has to flow.

What trouble are you having that you feel you want a static ip for a box?

I'd suggest contacting your ISP, as they are the ones handing out IPs, static or otherwise

Is this to help you set up the port forwarding?

If so, this is how it works:

Step 1.  Do the IPCONFIG thingy to get the IP address your router's giving you.  It'll probably be 192.168.XXX.XXX  Make note of the first 3 sets of numbers (the 192.168.XXX.___ part).
Step 2.  Make up a new number for the last part.  Most routers make the last number > 100, so something like 10 or 20 would work.  If the last number is <100, then make up a number like 200. 
Step 3.  Mix the 2 numbers together.  It should be 192.168.XXX.your number.  You just made yourself a new static IP address... :D
Step 4.  Odds are, you're also going to need to find your DNS servers.  IIRC, you can find the ones your ISP wants you to use in your router somewhere.  Find them, and write the first (only) 2 down.
Step 5.  Go to the Internet Connections part of the control panel.  On the screen where you add your IP address, give it your made up Static IP, then the 2 DNS servers you wrote down.
Step 6.  Go back into the router (if you did everything right so far, you should have no problem getting there), and set up the port forwarding...

Hello,

If you want a static IP and you are behind a router, then you simply must use IPConfig /all to see what your IP address is now.

Ex 192.168.1.2

Also look for the IP numbers for DNS Server, Default Gateway, and Subnet Mask.  Write all this information down.

Now, go into the Network connections in the Control Panel, and Double Click the connection in there that is the connection to the router.

Then you should click properties.

A new window appears. Inside the windows look for a box called, "This connection uses the following items:".

Look in that box for "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)", and double click it.

A new window appears again.

Click "Use the following IP Address"

You will have to fill out the information in the respective boxes that you wrote down earlier.

Yeah, I ipconfig /all and have all the numbers, put them in the internet connections box just like they were.  I had even changed the last set of numbers in the IP "to make up my own", but I was not sure if I was doing it correctly. You guys did confirm that for me.

Now, I can't get into my router.  I put the ip addy in the browser but it doesn't work.

Hey,

You can make the last set of the numbers what they were.

If you go to CMD (where you did ipconfig) and ping the IP of the router, what happens?

Also, please get us the results of the IPconfig /all

In the first picture only the first two rows apply and in your case from what I read above you should enter 101.

In the second picture on the Advanced...Filters tab ensure Block WAN Request is disabled. - This will allow pings from the WAN (Wide Area Network).

In the third picture (accessed by pressing the "UPnP Forwarding" button on the forwarding tab) ensure all the checkboxes for UPnP ports are empty - that is disabled.

Once done you should be able to login and draft and be drafted on Dynaverse II servers. For SFC3 forward ports 2302, 2303 and 6073 UDP. (ports 2303 and 2303 are already covered by the 2300-2400 range for SFC2)

I could not locate an Advance Filter tab, so I don't know how WAN is doing, but I did find PlugnPlay and it was disabled already.

I say we hold our breath and give this bad boy a try!!!

Dig around on the router sttings for a bit and see if you can find something like the "Block WAN Request" setting from the filters page on my linksys. You really should accept pings from the WAN for things to work well. (hopefully its not phrased as a confusing double negative as on mine...)

I punched every punchable button and I still couldn't find WAN anywhere!!! I'll keep nosing around, I'm sure his bound to show up.

But I think my greastest concern, at the moment, is to figure out a way to get the most firewalls on my pc. :D

You should also make sure that "Block ICMP ping" is unchecked.

It's really the same thing as what bonk said, just worded differently.

recheck your ipconfig /all

Make sure that your static lan IP is outside the range of the DHCP IP address pool of the router, or disable the DHCP server on your router and make sure all clients on the lan are configured statically (once you can see the router again..)

Try rebooting the router (unplug it, wait a minute - plug it back in again)

ensure you can ping 192.168.1.1...

Forgot to mention to disable UPnP services on the password tab (once you can see the router again of course... any luck there yet?)

I finally was able to reboot my computer and router this morning.

The router is showing now.

I believe I found WAN and UPnP and I think they are correct as they are.

So it looks like I'm good to go!!!

I just need some dry underwear and another brain cell.
