That's a riot.

A&M and UT still aren't as bad, I think as UNC and NC State. Some of my favorites T-shirts growing up:

Duke is puke
Wake is fake
but the team I hate
is NC State

Go Tarheels

and - Honk if you love Carolina
Moo if ya'll from State.

The rivalry between A&M and tu has definitely died down in recent years. I think this is mainly because of the dissolving of the Southwest Confrence, which I think effected all of the traditionall rivalries of all schools involved regardless if they ended up in the same conference or not, in addition to the tragic end of the Aggie Bonfire tradition (several students work on an off-campus bonfire now, but it's a mere shadow of what Bonfire used to be). tu wants OU to be their main rival now, and Texas Tech wants to be Texas A&M's rival. However, we here in Aggieland see the Red Raiders as a bunch of drunken bastards that couldn't get into A&M in the first place who are just trying to start a fight (no offence to any Red Raiders on this forum) and not worthy of "rival" status.

I think TU will have a hard time, as OU and OSU are the big rivals right now, and have been as long as I can remember.

OU and OSU are two of the friendliest schools I've visited as part of the Aggie Band. Both schools have done more to make us feel welcome than any other schools I've been to. Also, Texas A&M as things in common with both schools. Texas A&M and OU both hate tu (this follows the"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" concept), and Texas A&M and OSU have a very similar history. A&M and OSU were established under the Morell act, OSU used to be Oklahoma A&M, and they also called themselves the Aggies.

One of the loudest times I've ever heard anyone cheer for us while we were marching on the field at an away game was at the A&M vs. OU game at OU during my sophomore year (2003). The OU crowd seemed somewhat apathetic at the beginning, but they started cheering louder and louder with every counter-march we did. By the end of the drill, everyone was ecstatic.

When we went to play at OSU during my Junior year (2004), they let us practice before the game on their field (this is very unusual. The school we're visiting usually has a practice field for us to use. We don't even use our own field to practice on except for the last run-through on the Friday morning before a home game). After we were done practicing, they provided lunch for both bands. Then we proceded to beat the hell outta them during the game (as in we won big. We didn't actually beat anyone up). All in all, it was a very good experience.

By the way Stephen, did you go to, or are you a fan of, any of these schools?

I spent most of my College days at Rogers State College , In Claremore , OK, before it became an OU extension school, and then did some College there in Austin at Texas University. I still talk a few times a year to one of my old Physics teachers, Prof. Sudarshan. Brilliant man.

Bah... they all pale in comparison to the ONE true rivalry.

Michigan and Ohio State.

It seems that back in WWII the German's had a brilliant plan to groom their best english speakers to infiltrate enemy lines. Well they were well versed on topical information, and given perfectly correct U.S. uniforms and then sent towards the American lines. It just so happened that one of these men crested a hill to be confronted with a grizzeled looking U.S. Captain who had his sub-MG leveled right at him.

In an instant his training kicked in... "Don't Shoot, I went to Michigan, go Wolverines!" He yelled! His english was perfect and imagine his surprise as the Captain proceeded to empty his clip into the poor man.

As the Captain made his way back towards his camp he replied, "too bad I am from Ohio State."

I would also throw in Cal and Stanford. At least at Stanford they still have the Bonfire before the "Big Game" with Cal

Bonfire is still a very sensitive subject here at Texas A&M. Twelve students died in 1999 when the bonfire stack collapsed. Some of the families of the those that died sued the University, and a long messy legal battle ensued. A moratorium was placed on Bonfire paraphanalia, and the school decided to end bonfire with no plans of beginning it again in the future.

The entire atmosphere of the university had changed. I didn't become a student here until the fall of 2002, but I had visited the campus before and after the stack collapsed, and the difference was like night and day. It was very much evident when I became a student here that the student body was still mourning its loss three years later. Bonfire was a huge part of student life and essential to the Aggie spirit. It was the one effort that united the entire student body like nothing else. The
Corps of Cadets, Sororities, Fraternities, Northside residents, Southside residents, and even off-campus students all had there specific rolls and contributions. Teamwork both within and between these different groups along with hardwork and fanatic dedication were absolutely necessary for success. With Bonfire ended for good, it left a gaping wound in the Aggie spirit that only recently has made any significant progress in healing. During my freshman and sophomore years on the day that the stack collapsed, the Corps of Cadets marched over to the site and stood around the circle where the Bonfire used to stand. Anyone who knows what "deafening silence" is can begin to understand what it was like standing there.

Now we have a memorial on that site, and on that same day during my junior year, the memorial was dedicated amidst old Ags, music, and fond memories. All of the lawsuits eventually were settled. The moratorium was lifted (this happened during my sophomore year). Also, a student organization called the Bonfire Coalition began building an off-campus bonfire. The Aggie spirit is no longer in pain and grief, but the wound is still only half-healed.

Maybe in football... but in basketball, EVERYONE in the ACC is gunning for Duke....

UNC sort of acknowledges NCSU, but they LOATH Duke....

The big deal is that A&M has NEVER been very good at basketball until this year. This is the first time we've won an NCAA tournament game since 1980 (which, incidentally, was my dad's senior year at Texas A&M).
