OUTALANCE SHIPYARDS
da Vinci SHUTTLECRAFT - TYPE 9
TOS era Federation Shuttle
--------------
The Type 9 Warp Shuttle is my own fanciful creation.
Judging by the way the original series Galileo 7 was used in various episodes, and according to the Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph, the Galileo 7 was an impulse powered craft.
I got to thinking if there might have been a warp capable shuttle in the TOS era, and that led to the design of this ship.
Of all the modern shuttle designs, the Type 9 shuttle from Voyager is one of my favourites.
I backdated the design to the TOS era and incorporated many of the styling cues from the Galileo 7.
Looking through the Star Trek Sketchbook, and the Star Trek Phase II book, I found some concept sketches for a shuttle by Matt Jeffries.
His original concept was meant to be aerodynamic, and the boxier shape of the Galileo was a result of production realities.
I used his idea of a bullet shaped hull in my design.
On the front view, you'll notice two thick pylons under the nacelle struts - I decided there must be a matter-antimatter intermix chamber in the floor of the shuttle, and figured the warp nacelles would want to feed from those pretty directly.
Since the Enterprise's shuttles seem to be named after scientists and inventors, I named my sample Type 9 Shuttle "daVinci".
I got inspiration from Voyager's Type 9 Shuttles, and from some concept art by Matt Jeffries reproduced in the Star Trek Sketchbook, and in Star Trek Phase II.
