The Arena -- Short, focused, PvP only mini campaigns
« on: March 27, 2006, 02:07:56 pm »
I had this idea long ago, originally planned it for OP but due to limitations (mainly SQL support) had to run it in SFC III. The idea is to have short mini-campaigns on a small map that would be primarily PvP driven (no AI hex flipping by nutters). These mini-campaigns could focus on one part of a larger map, perhaps as part of a larger campaign. I haven't worked out all the details yet. Initially, it would jsut be stand-alone capture the VC hex style campaigns on a small or medium map, with the campaign only lasting about 2 weeks.

Aside from Hexx's idea, would there be any interest in this?

Hex flipping and low PvP battles is what keeps me outta dynaverse, well a lack of time too  :)

has anyone thought of saying a Dyna server is only open like 6 - 10 PM  that way all players would have to crowd in at once upping the PvP interaction ?

I also notice Dyna maps as being really large (KWC) and if your player base isn't I have wondered why they do that.  Recently on UAW Dyna the map seemed smaller, even so it still seemed big, cause when I look around for someone they are hard to find.

A tiny map is a great ideal if it ups the concentration of players.

Ya I did not really think about that,..

Maybe a US zoned server,..  or lots of coffee for other nations  :)

Just would like to see em more crowded, I wish I was here in its hay day, I have seen messages about hundreds of folks on a server,.. now that would be cool,.. until it crashed  :)))

I would be there , especially when talking PvP setups vs Hex Flipping.  I think a time zone thing would or could be too much of an issue, but for that reason would suggest 3 time zones.

1-say 7 pm to 11 pm Eastern
2-say 3 am to 7 am Eastern
3-say 11 am to 3 pm Eastern

or some such, where no matter where you live, or what your shifts are, there is a good chance you will be available for one of the time slots.  I think the biggest problem then would be how to turn it on and off for the time slots.

Why set a time? Just let the server run and people can log on whenever...

The problem is that half the community likes hex flipping. PvP exclusively will not bring out big numbers. This is likely part of the reason numbers died off on KCW. Many hex flippers simply went away after a few days.

I am confussed about hex flipping, what is the draw to it?  Now remember folks I do not have a lot of experience so keep that in mind.  It seems to me hex flipping is just AI battles.  Is it the fact that the long hard work of many battles changes the ownership of a hex that is the draw.  I am not trying to dis it, just understand why hex flipping is fun.  Call me dumb...

I suggested the time windows as a means of concentrating players, to me the draw is fighting skilled human opponents that maybe can even teach me new odd tactics etc.  By causing players to have a narrow window of time it could be we could see a server with 40 folks on it at once.  In my limited experience with KCW and UAW I only find a few if any folks on at any given time.

I like the ideal of varied time windows to allow for global players, never meant to exclude anyone...

Think campaigns and controlling territory, controlling the map.  Superior strategy etc.  Enough people see just PvP as a case of comparing their manhood.  :o

Ya but to go through that many battles against AI to flip a hex ,..  ugh,..  least for me.

To each his own though, we all like different stuff.

Hey one more thing, what the hell is a Nutter ??

Someone who logs insane numbers of hours on a server. Thus, the label "Nutter".

Fluf used to be the king of it, I'd say LordKrueg has taken his place. There are a number of others around too. Ask DieHard about "The Big Gulp"...  :D

Part of the draw of hex flipping is simply the comraderie of flying co-op missions with your buds in the wee hours, sharing a happy buzz, and scheming on overall map strategies. When doing a lot a hex flipping, when you do finally hit a PvP missions, its quite the adrenalin rush. (I know, I know... get a life... :))

In the overall scope of campaign servers, controlling at least certain areas of the map has always been important. Capturing and defending territory also has almost always usually determined the victor in a campaign.
Yes, many prefer the pure PvP over having to fight endless missions vs only AI.
I myself didn't play anything else but ladder leagues from SFC1, not getting into D2 play until long after hundreds (literally) were playing there for some time. I remember many times attempting to log into a server, only to find it had reached it's maximum number and getting the message "Please try again later" and going back to GSA play.
But, as long as there are Victory Points for taking territory on a campaign, there will be the need for players to flip hexes vs AI.
At first, I really hated having to do that, and like many, would log off when that was all there was to do. But, over time, I have accepted this as a "necessary evil" of sorts, and simply do what is needed.
But, Bonk is quite correct, any PvP encounters are still quite exhilarating!  ;D

While I also prefer PVP to hex flipping, I'd think the issue with a PVP only server would
be that if you get one side with 3 pilots who can wing up, and the other side only has 2 who can wing, the smaller
side would likely simply not fight, which of course would mean that the other side couldn't flip any hexes either..
