Anyone know if Malfador is planning on using a tactical part of the OP combat engine or what 3D model types he's using, mb .mods?

I doubt it has anything to do with the OP engine (you can create the style of SFC gaming with any number of game engines).  I'm betting they are using a similar 3d engine to the one they did for SE: Starfury, probably just modified, for their 3d combat sequences.  I've been meaning to try SE for a long time now (a title or two ago) but haven't gotten around to it yet, although I did download a demo a while back.  It seems like it could be a pretty cool game, and the price is right although it could be a little more right if it were free but you get what you pay for, right?

Trust me, SE is an awsome game!  I have both SE3 and SE4 and for a Turn Based Strategy game, you will have a blast playing it.  The mechanics of the initial game are based on an old TFG game called "Starfire" where all ships are sublight ships that use Warp points (ie. Worm holes?) to move from one star system another.

Much of SE5's Strategic game mechanics are going to be similar too SE4 (only improved some) but will have the addition of 3d Tactical Space combat and 3d Tactical Ground combat on planets.  The 3d engine will be pretty much like how SE: Starfury has its 3D space combat.  SE: Starfury (made by the same guy that did Space Empries or SE) is suppose to bhe Real Time Tactical Combat perspective in his Space Empire usniverse, very similar to SFC.

Hmmm, I thought I read that the combat in SE5 was going to be turn based.  If it is going to be real time, then it's definitely worth looking at for a mod (heck it's worth looking at even if it is turn based.  Nothing wrong with taking turns. ;))

Hmmm looks interesting... curious to see the demo. Hopefully it won't require a HT&L video card.

SE4 is the one I am playing. It has rich strategic depth and is everything an empire building game could be and more. It's so good it's addictive and worth the $20 I got it for.

It has 2 parts. The empire building and then tactical combat when two or more enemy empires ships/fleets get sent after each other. They are both turn based.

In the new SE5 due out this year, I thought malfador, he's the coder, was gonna do the tactical combat like the OP engine. Would be spectacular.

I've modified some of the SE4 files so that it's similar to trek. Warp engines, phasers, drones, Romulans have cloak, no one else does but can research it, etc. Cool stuff.

Cant wait for SE5. Be nice to see what the 3D tactical combat can do. I was thinking maybe they'd use real low polys and the OP engine could handle a few hundred ships. But maybe they are gonna use some other engine. They could do so much more with the OP engine tho...

Its anothere engine then the one OP uses.  Malfador is using a 3d engine called Truevision ( www.truevision3d.com ) for its game.  I have used Truevision for a few of my personal projects, its really a neat engine based on DirectX.  Malfador's game Starfury I believe is based on the same 3d Engine.

I wonder... is it competitive looking enough with the newer 3D programs? I betcha it has an unalterable 3D isometric camera view. Course, doesnt need anything better for what he's doing, it'd only be eye candy in that respect.

Oh, really??!!  Then I must have it!

I starated playing Starfire and SFB at the same time (both were from TFG) and had a blast with both.    Starfire was a great game for designing and controlling huge fleets of starships.

Ya, I have Starfire aswell.  An awsome game, and very easy to play the Tactical Battles with (must faster play then SFB).  If you liked Starfire S'Cipio, you will like Space Empires aswell.
