Now a group of German modders at www.modcontrol.com think they have found the reason. They have checked two Xboxes and found that the protective foil on the GPU heatsink's heat transfer pad didn't get removed during assembly.

Remember that Microsoft does not themselves manufacture the XBox it is subcontracted out.  The manufacturing defect is the fault of the 3rd party not Microsoft and is one not easily discovered in normal QC checking.  In spite of the article placing the blame on Microsoft in this instance I feel they are not at fault.

Yes, they are. Sure, they might blame it on the 3rd party mfg but sorry Microsoft, it's your product. You're going to get the blame.

Sorry, but I agree with Punisher on this one.  Microsoft is responsible, their name is on the product.  The same would go for Sony or Nintendo.  However, if Microsoft is willing to give up any claim to the profits from the 360 (and shoot them all my way) then I'll let them off the hook for the problems with the system.  :)

Microsoft may not be directly responsible for the flaw, but they are ultimately responsible because it's their name that's on the product.  That's part of the risk of subcontracting.

I checked into this, and apparently the little foil thingie on the heatsink is supposed to be there.
