I have a ? about these new AMD chips
« on: March 10, 2006, 11:57:37 pm »
Is dual core really what it is cracked up to be? I saw a dual core m/b for 200 bucks that supports the AMD Athlon, what will it do?

Thanks,

JM

My duel core (AMD 4800 x2) crunches about 3 times as many seti units as my 2800+ in a 24 hour period.

I had hoped for more performance though from my duel SLI though...may be driver issues (?)

Over all I am quite impressed with the vrrooommm of the duel core. Have yet to load it w/ digital audio processing by cool edit pro...that has not been installed yet.

Yeah duel core is the way to go but wait until AMD comes out with the new processor pin standard in the second half of the year if you plan to build or upgrade later.

It seems like the computer world is going through some serious growing pains right now.  I'm not planning on making any serious upgrades to my hardware until the new hardware becomes more mainstream and the software gets closer to catching up with it (and when I have the money to spare).

Everyday, I'm feeling a little more apprehensive about those Athlon XP 2500+ centered rigs I built my kids... even about my own Athlon 64 3000+ box.  Accelerated obsolescence; pfaghh, phooey.

Once you build your system, you have to stop looking at any computer hardware for at least one year.  You will just make yourself sick otherwise.  If it makes you feel any better I'm still sitting on a 478 based Intel that I built about two and a half years ago.

Well... if YOU, Jav, are still using a socket 478 Intel , then I certainly don't feel nearly as bad now, though there always a smidgen...

I'm still using an AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz Thunderbird processor from when I first built my computer over four years ago.  I've upgraded/replaced everything except the CPU, RAM, case, and keyboard (I've had to replace the power supply twice).

Since about 1999 , I've used nothing but AMD myself. The company just seems to be providing better and better.

Stephen<-------- Looks at case, and thinks about upgrading... from his 2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64.

Ahh Man, I'm going to have to build a new system. Just for Grins and giggles.

I hope my case questions are still over at your place MR. Tricorder, as I might have a few more....

550 Watt PS, Pshew. I'm going mental on my next build.

May as well wait now for the June/July release of the Athlon X2s with DDR2 memory and up to a 2mb cache per core instead of the current 1mb per core maximum.  So far they look like they will support 800 mhz but there are rumours that motherboard makers are being told to support 1066mhz.  Why they are being told to support the higher speed is not stated but it is suggestive that the X2s may support it either immediately or in the not too distant future.

Oh shoot New, It'll take me at least 6-7 months to save up for such a mchine, and I'm a very patient man. If there going to one gig MB's, then heck I can wait. My system  will be on 8/01, Two years old.
