Compatability Questions
« on: March 09, 2006, 09:10:39 pm »
I am thinking about building a new comp and I need to know what type of components are compatible with OP.

What I am certain of: AMD 64, Win XP 32 bit.

Deciding between AMD x2, probably 3800 depending what price I can get, but something from the dual core series.

Or something from AMD single core processor series, like AMD 64 4000+.

I know both are overkill for OP, so I am not asking for performance, but what will work.

Who here got either to work for them?

Also, the video card.

I need something that can play Klingon Academy, OP, Homeworld 2, and Civ IV with out much trouble.

On the KA forum, I found out that ATI series works best and nVidia does not work at all.

So I am thinking something from the ATI x800 series, or x1_00 series, depending on the price, I am limited to around $300.

Does anyone here play OP with a card from these series, if so which?

I do not play any shooters, or most modern games.

My only dilemma is with trying to find a card that can handle CivIV well and still play my old games.

All of the above should be fine.   OP is an old game, but with the OP+ models oit looks wonderful with the modern graphics card.

That is nice to know. :)

But I am looking for more detail. So if someone got AMD 64 (dual or single core) and running XP 32 bit, please post your config. Pretty please. ;D

Details, such as motherboard, CPU, plus video card brand and version, would be appreciated.

Hey I just got the following:

AMD X2 3800+
DFI Lanparty N4 Ultra-D
1 GB Ballistix ram (2-2-3 timing) ($100 nice!)
eVGA GeForce 6800GS

I ran ATI for some years for graphics and got frustrated with it;  nVidia seems to do me well.  And the nForce4 chipset is the best.

AMD64 X2 3800+ running at 2.2ghz. , 2 gb. of low latency RAM,  7800 GTX's in SLI, all in a MSI Diamond Plus MB.   No problems at all with SFC OP and WinXP.

As far as video cards, your biggest choice would be either AGP or PCIE. Anything at or above either the nVidia 6800 series or ATI 800 series should do nicely with OP. As far as CIV 4, I don't have/play that game, so I don't know the minimum requirements for it.

It's PCIx now. PCIe is a failed tech.

That may be, but if you look at the nomenclature of video cards on Newegg and so forth, they are listed as PCIE, same as in the Bios for my MB.

Well, I don't shop at Newegg. Their prices just aren't that good. As for your motherboard BIOS, I don't know. How old is the board?

I must report that my original source on PCI-X vs PCIe had gotten some stuff backwards. It is PCI-X which is the failed tech. It was an attempt at lengthening the life of existing PCI by increasing its clock speeds and making the slots 64 bit. It failed. PCIe is the new thing and it works well.

So basically, you hijacked this thread for no reason and without answering bca11's original question.
