Ghosts of Starfleet Command
« on: March 04, 2006, 04:45:51 pm »
I've been a long time SFC historian of sorts (who could really claim title to that? LOL) Anyhow, I've been doing a lot of searching over at Wayback Machine, and I think you'll like what I've found. The following is pretty raw, but I think you'll like the results! The websites they have on file are often incomplete, missing graphics, but keep in mind they represent a shapshot of sorts on the day they were copied into storage. Please note- the forums listed are not interactive, unpredictable, and most topics are missing.

I highly recommend taking a visit to Wayback to find your own websites you've been searching for, have dead links to, or whatever. The important thing to remember is a search can only be done by URL's, not text.

Anyhow, have fun! I sure did :D

if you guys are interested.. We are gonna  launch with 3 games and  we can do  SFC if there is a place for it and its  SL as you remember it. Easy to use interface, easy setup and rules setup like the community desires.  Let me know  darkknight@starlance.com,
I am old school SL , was there with Ven, BK,Silverfox,Tant the Rant, Zevious, Seandals, Susan  etc and I took over once it all went away. I still have the coders, graphics people and a new interface almost 100% ready to go.

The old Fed CIC that was ran by NannerSlug:

Not much in the archive from Starfleetcomms though,  kinda sad....

Woohoo I'm a ghost! Yeah, shame about that but the site was fairly heavily script driven with a sql backend and all sorts of badbehavior bot blockers. I think I made a rod for my own back there.

Try as I may, I can't find you in there, Clarky  :'(

I haven't come across Nanner, or Thrain either (he being practically the same time as me), but there may be a good chance for them since there's so many in that time frame I haven't sorted thru. If I remember correctly, you signed up about a week or two after Ghis and Canuck? I checked from them forward and there's no sign of you in there. There are a few numbers that weren't archived it seems, perhaps yours was one.

Sorry, bud!

OK folks- after a lengthy search, I finally found the old SL forums- WOOT!! The hardest part was I had lost the original link and had a heckuva time finding it again. So, without further ado, here's a compilation of the list of threads I've found at web.archive.org. There may be more, but this looks like the most of 'em... Unfortunately, most of the threads aren't available :( It's still a real trip, though! Have fun!

$49.99, wiseguy!

And it was still worth every penny, or more for buck, since I paid a penny less!

In fact, as I was saying either in the OT or Modeling forums, using a lot of you guys'... past and present... models, especially lately John Stone's SFC Refit Spacedock and Ghost's Fleetdock 13's planet models and textures, it's like I've a totally new game!

I really didn't have much issue with Interplay's stock models, except for their Jupiter (looked like a Looney Tunes planet) and their Klingon freighters (... loved their Gorn CA... ), but wow, new models and textures have really made it visually shine!

I remember seeing ads for it in magazines and looking at the box when it came out, especially the small descriptions they had of the weapons loadouts of a few of the game's CAs'... I remember thinking to myself that I had no idea what 'phaser-1's were, or why Klingons/Romulans even had phasers, or what a Lyran or Hydran was... but it was a new Star Trek game, and it looked cool as hell, so there was no way I wasn't going to weasel that $49.99 of my mother's hard earned money out of her pocket for it. And the rest is history. ;D

I'm amazed by two things - first that I still have a valid login here and second, some of the old sites.

All the Starlance time spent playing - running the campaign for House Martok - many of those player names - Taldren, AfCub (another campaign) - heck, even the SG Campaign that I tried to help Talon run all those years ago.

Komodo I have been lost for so long I thought people had forgotten me by now......heh.

....And Clarky, OMG! how have you been man?! way too long since you have been heard from! The only thing I want as a blast from the past is a reunion of the whole 9th. Too many folks to mention in one pass that's for sure!

I'm going to get my copy of OP from my son tonight to try my hand at piloting again.........which one is the 'fire' key again?

'Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee. From no blood wilt thou shrink. Wilt thou therefore take Túrin Turambar, wilt thou slay me swiftly?'
And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer: 'Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.'

Oh Heck!  I am still around     . . .  occasionally . . . .

I almost never talk with any of the old crowd anymore.  Still catch Remus once in a while.  Atticbat and Pneumonic81 I still see around on ICQ.  Most of the other folks seem to have just faded away.

OK... Where's that darned "Reply" button.... aha!

Hey- nice to see you both, Thrain & Buzz! It's been a long time! Glad to know you're still out & about :)

I've pretty well hung up my uniform for good, now. I haven't played more than twice over the last year, & can't even remember the last time I was online... I still like to snoop & see what's kicking now & then. It's good to know there's still a final frontier to visit with.

I been keeping pretty busy with one thing or another, if it's not keeping the car going (still got the old Caravan, Buzz lol), it's the house, or work, or the wife, or projects I've been pecking at for some time now.

I just want to say it was good times, fellas! You're the tops, and I'll always cherish the memories!

OK... I was doing a little thinking tonight, & it hit me. There were some more forums available! I did a search, and sure enough, I found the last edition of Taldren forums, as follows.

The search results, starting Feb 10, 2003, to May 20, 2004-

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://forums.taldren.com/

Some are dead, some are the same thing. Be warned- it took about a minute for these pages to download, but once it got warmed up it got better.

ALSO!!!

I found in there the old Black 9 Forums for those interested. I see a post now & then about it, so here's a couple  pointers:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030413222325/208.57.228.4/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=Black9General
http://web.archive.org/web/20030801152526/208.57.228.4/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=Black9General

I also found a link to a GameSpot page which has screenshots:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030417181942/www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/black9/screenindex.html

I'm sure there's more to be found if you go diving :) Have fun!!

You have a problem with my posts then let me quoth Kyle Broflovski.

Come down here (and censor me) you stinking aliens!

There were complaints about the posts in question.  Personally I found them pretty incoherent but they appeared to be mostly a series of personal attacks.  Personal attacks being against the forum rules of course.  Therefore the posts were removed from the public areas.  (Not by me but the removal was appropriate under the rules).

CUGS RULES!

Here the rules are the Dynaverse rules and if you wish to keep posting here those are the rules you must follow.  If you don't like the rules then stay away.

What is better a group of censoring nice guys or a group of free speech, free speaking assholes? That is easy it is the free speaking chazholes.

Vulgarity is also out against the rules so remember to obey that rule as you have violated it here.

If you have a problem with what some one does a polite explanation of what you believe they did wrong is what you should be doing.  Attacking the individual rather than the action WILL get you in trouble here with permanent banning being the final solution.  We really prefer not to go that far but do when we must.

Hopefully you will review the rules and stick within them in the future.

Hopefully the "Professor" will get the hint on his posting style.  I really do prefer that people reform rather than be banned.  Ultimately it is his choice.

Wow, this is still going. I started with SFC and stopped at OP. Many a nights on online with SL matches. I was drunk most of the time, so the memory is rather hazy. Man what a blast. Served with Za'Kath, Martok, and Red Claw Fleets in SL.

Cheers Guys.

SO there I was reinstalling SFC for old times sake and playing the single player.  Thought to myself.. wonder what the odds are of there being a dynaverse out there... we were some hardcore fans back in the day.

Lo and behold I have found my way back home.

Wow its good to see this game is still played, now to find my way online to get blown up by some of you.

Hey there.  Started to play SFB recently, that got me thinking about the D2.  Poked around the 'net and found this place and a lot of old faces.  I'm sure I'll be poking around in the D2 soonish.

It really is neat to walk down memory lane this way. Thanks, Komodo. Makes me miss flying with those of you I had the honor to play the game with. I remember my spy mission into SSTF as an iCoP... the storm that created... the SHG days... RTS... but really was always an iCoP at heart. This thread got me thinking about all the old bastards I used to hang out with... what a great bunch. Mag, Wis, Wolverine... later on with TobinDax, Horus and others... ah, sweet memory... what splendid torture you do provide.

Lots of memories and familiar names around here...but my account seems dead here and had to re-register...although surprisingly enough I remembered my account info for SFC2.net and it worked and they're still using my forum design that I made so long ago for SFC2.net...amazing...

Surprised deadmansix is still alive...I think he's over 100 by now...ha...and Max Power...Hydrans were always resilient...

Greetings all. Boy does this bring back memories. Not even sure how I stumbled across this. But the best gaming ever with the General War Campaign et al. Unbelievable. It is coming back to me as a Mirak fleet member and playing Romulans of all things in the campaign just to prove they could win. I am going to be finding and getting a copy of these old classics and reinstalling as soon as I can.
This game was so far ahead of its time. The internet and the network coding never quite lived up to what could have been. Oh the days of 6 people online with 12-18 total ships and everyone hoping nobody would drop cuz it had taken hours just to set everything up...

Well. If anyone is getting a campaign together or at least has access to the old campaign files, I would love to check them out...

Several are in the works,BUT with the problems with vista and win7 dealing with the multiplayer side of the game, they are waiting for a fix.

XP still works fine for MP tho.

Wow!  This old thread is still kicking??
LOL !
Man does that ever bring back some old memories!  Hard to believe that since that time I've sold my bass boat (several years ago now); the man who owned one of the best boat sales/repair shops in the area is gone  (back when the crash took place) ...   And I now do my own ship models.

Nanner finally retired from WOW  (with 2 epic toons in tow).  Yes, he was that competitive (upper 2% of the best guilds on line).

What I wouldn't give to have had a "figure print" of my favorite ship I used in the SFC days to set beside the one I have from WOW.

BTW...   thanks to those of you who took the time to dig up all of those old archives.
If you aim at nothing:  you WILL hit it every time !

Sorry for being necromatic, 9th Fleet has had a change of command with the sad news that Reprisal / Sharpe has stepped down due to RL commitment. The following is the announcement post.

----------
Attention on Deck!

It is not often that we have the opportunity to write posts such as these, but on this occasion it more than qualifies. Many of you are well aware of Admiral Sharpe, the longest serving active Ninth Fleet Officer and our longest serving Commanding Officer. Though we have all played alongside him on numerous occasions I believe that his greatest efforts for the fleet are present in the work he has done behind the scenes over the past fifteen and a half years, every since the first few months that Ninth Fleet existed, back in 1999. Without him this fleet would not be where it is today. I would even go as far as to say that this fleet may not have even still been around if it wasn't for the dedication of people like our good friend, Sharpe. That makes what I am going to say next even more important and historical for the fleet.

Earlier this week, Admiral Sharpe informed us of his intentions to retire due real life work commitments. After serving over a solid fifteen years in the fleet, I can imagine that this wasn't a choice that was made too easily, but Sharpe has always had the best interests of the fleet at heart. Knowing that he will no longer be able to serve as our CO, he has made the decision to retire. Today (Saturday, February 28th, 2015) is to be his last day as a Ninth Fleet officer.

I think all of us here will agree that whilst we all had our differences at times, both between the Admiralty and Operating Ranks, we all looked up to Sharpe to keep things in check and make the decisions that needed to be made at the right time. For me personally, the Ninth Fleet will not be the same without him. When Admiral Spartan retired in November 2009, Sharpe took over as the Fleet CO (for his second stint I might add) and I knew that we were in good hands. Not only that, but to date he is the longest serving CO that this fleet has ever had, once again showing the confidence we have all had in him and the dedication he has for this fleet. In the words of Fleet Admiral Ghis, the founder of this fleet: "Sharpe (Reprisal) [...] came to us and did us proud"
High praise indeed. Shame you never got your Fleet SEAL crest though!

Moving forward, as of 0600 UTC on the 1st of March, the following arrangements will be in place:

Rear Admiral Richard Sochin is hereby requested and required to relieve Admiral Sharpe and assume the position of Commanding Officer, Ninth Fleet at the rank of Admiral. Congratulations, Sir.

Rear Admiral EC Gadget is hereby requested and required to assume this position of Executive Officer, Ninth Fleet at the rank of Vice Admiral, on the request of Rear Admiral Sochin.

Commodore Chris Ralston is hereby promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and is to continue his work as the Commanding Officer of the STO Division. Congratulations!

Fleet Captain Sulfrus is hereby promoted to the rank of Commodore with all rights and privileges therein. Well done, and welcome to the Command Staff.

Captain Omdra is hereby reinstated at the rank of Commodore at the request of Admiral Sochin and Vice Admiral Gadget. He is to assume the role of advisor to the Fleet CO and XO. Welcome back, your office is still how you left it last (barring perhaps a few dozen - or thousand - tribbles).

Admiral Sharpe is hereby awarded the Fleet Service Medal, Medal of Honour and the Gold Cross.

Lastly, on behalf of the Command Staff and the entire Ninth Fleet, I wish Reprisal (Sharpe) the very best and I hope you really do find time (and internet) to pop in every now and then! You'll always have friends here and your name will certainly be remembered for decades to come. And now, we look to the future whilst building on our past. Thank You.
