Outside of service pack 2, this is my first experience with a firewall. McAffee very nicely asked if I wanted to grant an acception for the firewall to Op, just like service pack to originally did and I chose yes, all the time. I get to the directory server just as usual, but when I click to join a server,(UAW test server) it counts down to 1:59 and the screen goes black and I am at desk top 3 seconds later, consistently. Any help for this nooby would be apreciated. Thank you.

  • You don't have to live like a refugee.
Try disabling the McAfee firewall altogether when playing on the Dynaverse. (preferred for misison stability, not just ability to login)

I actually tried that first before I knew it would do the grant access bit. It still does the same thing disabled, where it allows me right to the campaign selector and to select server, join and pop off to desk top at about 1:59 on the counter.

Try disabling all components of McAfee. Or possibly uninstalling the firewall component.

(I had McAfee interfere with serial communications once - took me ages and much resources to track it down as the source of the trouble)

Just tried what should have worked by their help site and I got the same result. Personal firewall to options, to alert settings, check gaming mode, ok and all should be good. Should..... ::)

looks like I will have to, but there is all this junk about only doing so in safety mode

I can't ping you. You have to be pingable to play on the Dynaverse.

EDIT: scratch that - I can ping you... so you're OK there...

was privacy service part of your setup for it? I know that you cant play on the d2 with privacy service installed (even if its turned off). IF so uninstall it and try again.

Yeah, Tracey had trouble with that, wasn't sure if it was Norton or McAfee though.

yeah it has the privacy thing. Also, although you were successful in pinging me, the firewall summary says it blocked you.

That would be a problem, in more than one way. ;)

Well thank you both for your help. I uninstalled the privacy portion which was easy. (my comp> uninstall> wizard allows you to choose which one, or many to uninstall and presto! Now with that gone and firewall disabled, I got onto the server and all looked right. Just have to try playing next time on. +1 to both.
