I will be willing to host fun IP games as time allows.

It will not be tonight. I will post here again when I am free to do so.

My bandwith is big enough for 6 players.

Date and times will be posted at a later date.

I regularly host games for my campaign, some six player, and have players use dial up,.. you just cannot play at speed 9.  Lower speed can actually allow some different tactics, I have done it with speeds 6-7 with no lag reported from the player who uses dial up.  Dial up speeds can vary based on location.  We have even done 18 ships with one guy having dial up and at those game speeds there is no lag. 

I know you folks like the fast game speed but it is not that bad to be able to take drink off your beer during battle and not lose the game cause of it  :) 

No asteroids either,. they seem to cause a lag issue for us, our campaign maps have seen a great reduction in asteroid hexes over the years

You can view our current campaign map at www.sfbuaw.com   Click on the link to the Large Magellanic Cloud map.  There are actually a couple of maps that are linked with worm holes that players fight over.  Sorta like Spock's 3 dimensional chess game.  These are not Dynaverse campaigns either.  I am very surprised that I am the only one out there that runs none Dynaverse Campaigns,.. 

Point being dial up is no excuse !!

Hmmm tempted to give it a try, usually 31.2Kbps does not support more than one other player. I can't use TS at the same time... TS takes all my bandwidth - can't do anything else while using it. I'll try and hook up with you and Lyrkiller later tonight... I got a hankerin to fly some Gorn.

P.S. didja know that a host/domain name works for TCP/IP game connections? I used to use it with my dynamic DNS account so my buddies wouldn't need to know my current IP address and could make a permanent entry in their game connections list...

Almost forgot: I assume we'll be running OP+4?

Also, if the host can add HideRaceFromOthers=1 under [Network] in their sfc.ini I'd be most happy.  :) (can be done with EzINI - "Multiplayer Hidden Race" checkbox)

Just tested it - yes. (I had assumed so considering the challenge instructions)

You can also build virtual machines with notepad. Just take a look at the .vmx file format.

If I made a VM and installed Windows XP, or any other OS, would I then be able to open the VM in the player and install software?   do I need the full version of VMware to alter virtual machines?

Lol, I don't think we could have hijacked a thread any better if we tried!  ;D

To answer your question, yes, you should be able to install software on the Guest OS running in the VMware player. (Just keep this in mind when settting the max disk size for the virtual disk, and I reccomend allocating the space for it instead of dynamically sizing it)

I just finished testing the flatfile webmap on a Slackware 10.0 - Apache 1.3.31 - php 4.3.7 - eAccelerator 0.9.2 install... it worked quite nicely.  :)

Note when constructing a VM it is important to install the VMware tools as instructed for the particular guest OS, it made quite a difference in the performance of my Slackware VM. It also allows for shared folders between the guest and host OS.  8)

For networking I find using the VMWare NAT and DHCP the most straightforward, you can setup port forwarding under NAT in the virtual networking options. (I tested viewing the webmap running on my Slackware VM from my WinXP host OS using this feature)


EDIT: Don't forget the new free server version has many features of the workstation and is not a demo that expires.
