Invisible Cloak in OP
« on: February 17, 2006, 03:16:55 pm »
A friend played a fast one on my team in a multiplayer(6players) fleet action.  He had a Romulan ship Cloak, and he lowered shields.

Since the only thing you see is shields, it was super tough to find that ship.  There is only the faintest of image to see, and I mean faint!!.

In a fleet action with all the other stuff going on it is damn near impossible, and of course he got his ship into fine position without anyone knowing about it.

Thought you other folks might like to try that on someone some day.  Only works once, and if you cycle though targets it will be detected(which we all do now), but still had me nearly snarf my beer out my nose when it happened.

As a follow up I have a question for Chris Jones,..

When I used the UAW mod the shields vanished (they still worked though) if I switched back and forth between full sheilds version and no shields version etc.  You told me this was a bug and handed me a patch for it (which worked).   Well,...

Can't you mod the game to allow the sheilds to vanish as they did in the UAW bug, thereby giving the Romulans true invisibility ?

Just an odd thought,..

My problem with the no shield graphic is that won't it apply to everyone cloak or not? It's fine to give Rom's the invisibility, but it also means you won't see you own shield strength (except on the instruments panels, in relative terms.)

But Kudos to your friend the Rommie, that was seriously a gutsy move...
As you mentioned, cycling through targeting recticles, or use the Full info mode (F11) or the minimap would all reveal his position. (admittedly, a fleet action make this more annoying than it sounds)

Ah...but I always use F11 and was one of the many things I was upset about them removing from SFC3.  There has only been two occasions where I had Information Overload at Full HUD setting.

I am not a programmer but I am hoping that if Chris has some level of control of the shields showing or not that somehow he could make the shields disappear on only the cloaked ship.  I know that is a big hope.

I knew nothing about F11 use but will test it out thanks

Long ago a friend of mine as a joke used a planet image for his Romulan ship.  When he cloaked the ship was totally invisible to the other player.  You could still target it, just not see it.  Not having any skill with manipulating images I can't say what the difference was between the standard ship image and a planet image that allowed it to become invisible.  Someone with the appropriate skill might be able to find out though.
