Greetings
« on: June 04, 2005, 01:06:52 am »
Greetings to all.  I used to frequent the old (first version) Taldren board a loooong time ago in the days of SFC1 thru when SFC2 and OP were released.  When they went to the "new" ubb, somehow my account got deleted and I never bothered to register or post since; but I have lurked periodically.  I have all the SFC games, but haven't played online since the days when OP was new.  I seem to only play OP with any regularity.  I like it best, but do enjoy all the SFC games.  Since the various fiascos associated with Taldren closing up shop, I'd first like to say thanks to you guys for keeping the SFC flame burning.  I've been lurking around here too and decided to finally start up an account.  I still play OP single player from time to time even after all this time - it's always installed on my computer(s).  I do have a few questions for the crowd if you don't mind helping out an old geezer come back up to speed.

What's the current OP online standard configuration?  i.e. mod(s) or whatever and what's the best installer package for someone who could figure it out but would rather just spend more time downloading an auto-installer?  I just may start playing humans again.  Since SFC1, lots of changes in my life have taken away time from gaming unfortunately.  Back in the day, I (humbly) could win against humans on the D2 servers about 75% of the time, maybe more.  I did get a little frustrated with some immaturity at Gamespy and some of the servers, though, but I'm guessing that now since this game is older, the old geezers are probably a lot more fun to play with and the young punks have moved on to other games.

What servers are recommended?

Are there still fleets?  If so, which ones are recommended?

What are the good OP mods to maximize my single player experience?  I fly mostly Romulan.  Yeah, yeah, I know, but don't you whippersnappers underestimate a crusty old rommie who knows what he is doing.  It's an unbreakable affliction from my bygone SFB days in the '80's.  However, I do consider myself very proficient using any race and play style.  I can shoot those magic  ;D photons with the best of the Flatheads too.

On a more detailed note, is there a way to get computer generated AI controlled ships to start with better configurations?  It seems that even in late and advanced era, 95% of drone ships still have slow drones with minimum reloads.

edit: oh yeah, one last thing, where's the best location for SFC resources?  I probably have most of the stuff I need and the various tactics guides and things of that nature, but there's no harm in reading up before facing humans again.

Cheers,
Slick.

What reptor said. You moght also try the new op manual written by him also. Its very good and updates alot of stuff.OP 4.0 is the standard mod now days.We are pretty much using it as the basis for all the other mods and moded servers. Its included in pestys installer. Many new missions are out with more in the pipe. most are included in pestys installer also.
And most of all Welcome back.
