« on: February 13, 2006, 08:13:46 am »
Where do you guys actually play SFC3 online anymore? I try to log onto Dynaverse on the game itself but everytime is get to "Starting DirectPlay Test" it never connects, it just times out. Now SFC3 online when i used to play it was awesome and id love to start up again but where are there any servers anymore? Can someone point me in the right direction??

Are you running the most current patch?

If not, click the big Dynaverse banner at the top of the page here, and go to the downloads section, and get updated.   ;)

Have you made the IP address setting in your SFC ini? (note it must be your PUBLIC IP address, and there is a typo in the readme, the ports are 2302,2303 and 6073, and ensure you are not running any software firewalls and your router is accepting pings from the wan, and make sure you do not have the Norton privacy filter installed, ensure UPnP is disabled on your router, if port forwarding ensure your LAN config is static and that you know how to do that properly - http://www.portforward.com).

SFC Dynaverse is very different from all other multiplayer games, in that it cannot be known who you must connect to in game in advance, thus these settings must be made.

Same goes for OP just the ports are 2300-2400, 47624 and no IP address entry is required in the sfc.ini.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240429

OP uses the DirectX 7 Directplay ports and SFC3 uses the DirectX 8 directplay ports.

It is possible that the activision access servers are down, we are not responsible for those, you'd have to contact activision to ascertain the status of the SFC3 access servers.

(and you are sure you're using your public IP address? i.e. it should NOT start with 192.168.x.x or 10.0.0.x or 172.16.x.x... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_IP_address)

Public IP address in which part? When you say public do you mean the actual routers address?

Yes I mean the IP address assigned to the router on the WAN side by your ISP. Also the router must accept pings from the WAN.

The router's public IP address is the one that must be entered in the sfc.ini, also be aware you will need to update your sfc.ini when/if your public IP address changes.

That is the IP address range you forward the ports to, assuming your LAN config is static and the DMZ is not enabled. (and that your LAN uses that private IP range) And don't actually use 192.168.x.x but rather your private IP address as reported by an "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt (assuming you're running WinXP or NT... on Win9x use Start...Run..."winipcfg")

The IP address to enter in the sfc.ini is the router's public IP address, NOT your PC's private LAN IP address. Your private LAN IP address can only be seen from the LAN it cannot be seen from the internet so there is no sense in having SFC3 report your private IP address as the one for other players to connect to, as that would be impossible.

Have you read up on portforwarding and LAN configurations at http://www.portforward.com yet?

Have you verified with another SFC3 player or activision that the access servers are indeed up?

Is your router connected to your PC by USB or is it a real router?

I have a static IP address, DMZ is off, ports are configured, router is connected via USB. I assumed that you played SFC3 online via dynaverse...do you mean to tell me you do not?

I did, the first week the game was released. I went through exactly this. I soon realized I much preferred SFC:OP however.

"Routers" connected by USB are not guaranteed to work properly, if you have an ethernet card in your PC and the router has an ethernet connection i'd use that. I'm pretty sure you need to use a real ethernet adapter to actually forward ports. Otherwise, your best bet is probably to just bypass the router.

Sorry the router is using Ethernet not USB. Still not working though. Was that picture taken today?

The screenshots above were taken on Nov 11, 2002 to demonstrate the D3 to others who had not tried it yet.

No, I have not played SFC3 since the first week it was released, I was extremely disappointed with what had been done to the game, however I know lots of others enjoy playing it and I try to help out where I can.

Have you asked activision if the access servers are up?

At this point, if you are not sucessful I'd reccomend connecting directly to your ISP, bypassing the router when you want to play on the D3.
