just batting an idea around in my head
« on: February 11, 2006, 02:52:35 pm »
Likely nothing would ever come of it but figured I'd throw it out.  Likely too much Klingon still in my head  ;D

Anyhow, just wondering if there would be any ideas, thoughts, etc about the formation of the Klingon Empire.  The klingons took over from a races referred to as the "old Kings" according to SFB lore.  The Klingons were one of several subject races of this older empire and I thought it might be interesting to have a server dedicated to the rise of the Klingon dominance.  If such a project were undertaken we would basically have to create the other races that the Klingons competed with on their rise to power.

I'm thinking it would be really pre early era with ships having the crudest of shielding and equipped with a good bit of armor.  Also I'm thinking:

the phaser 2 as a dominant weapon with the phaser 3 being the norm.

Slow drones only and only a few racks on a few ships and no amd.

Ships not being capable of speeds greater than 15-20 even with everything off, and a heavy reliance on impulse engines and batteries for power.

The plasma F or plasma I being a major weapon for 1 race.

Most races not being allowed in nebulas due to low tech, but perhaps some being allowed as racial flavor.

Few transporters, just enough to take planets (unless the ground assault shuttle can be made to work)

No ECM allowed in PvP, ECCM would be ok but only useful to counter the primitive fighters

Lower HET percentages for all ships

anyhow just wondering if the idea had any popular interest, not saying I'd ever actually get the idea developed, just wondering if it was worth any further consideration.

I often wished that Paramount had adopted the Old Kings background and used it to explain the Old/New Klingons.  The TOS Klingons would be a race modified to be administrators and scientists the TNG Klingons would be the warrior modified race.  Then SFC could have substituted one of them for the Kzinti (instead of the Mirak name being created).

Giving ships built in ECM would operate to degrade the effects of weapons to reflect the more primitive times.  ECCM would then operate to enhance targeting at the cost of power.

Degrade warp power to the next lower category.  CAs with 20 warp, CLs with 15, DD with 10.  Replace half the missing warp with APR or Impulse to complete the simulating of a lower tech time.  Slower ships lousy sensors unless boosted by heavy power dedicated to sensors (while slowing ships still further).

Half shields because the tech is lower and weapons less powerful (maybe 1/3 depending on test results).  Fewer or no tractors.

Instead of armour maybe more (center) hull to give much the same effect (C hull = to total current hull).

I'd be tempted to set it up on my mothers system for my nephews to play.  Ought to be good for driving them nuts.   :)

Its got potential, but consider what you'll need to do:
Get modelers to model these other races.
Make backstory for each race capapble of explaing why each ship is armed how it is, why each ship looks and handles as it does.
Playtest how all these modified ships handle and see whether or not they are balanced.
Constructing a decently balanced map.

Not sure, but is any of this covered in the Early Years expansion for SFB?

System Specs:

Dell Dimension E521
AMD64x2 5000+

How to make the kings more powerful without too overly powerful.

I would assume that the Old Kings would not be included.  The SFB backstory had them probe the center of the galaxy and detect that it had exploded.  A radiation wavefront from the explosion is due along in 20,000 (or so) years to sterilize this area of the galaxy so they took everything that they valued and moved to the Magellanic Clouds.  What was the point in maintaining an Empire that was doomed in just a short time?  The former subject races were abandoned and over time the Klingons arose from the wreckage as the new rulers.

This backstory links up with Kors comments that the Empire has to expand because of the lack of resources.  The old Kings mined them out when they were leaving without concern for the future of those left behind.  Which of course gives room for victory conditions, seizing and holding areas that have resources that the Old Kings missed or had a surpluss of.

LMAO ......noipe.  A racial background yes, but I'm not such an SFB geek that I need it for individual ships, you have mistaken me for t00l or Scippy   ;D

Yup and thats where the players come into play, Die Hard's opinion in particular would be sought out as he is very fair and very skilled at spotting difficulties here.

Already got a solution here, the kings wouldn't be a major player, although I think I would allow them to be flown to a certain degree, call them the rear guard if you will, composed of newer non PvP type players.  This would give the newer players a "handicap" and make it interesting for them and their opponents when they met in battle.

very interseting idea but DH tells me it doesn't work right

Likely be a 2 week run if done, 1 week is too short for that much work  ;)  I think I'd start it with frigates and light cruisers and make heavies available in week 2 plus a few more goodies.

need the SFB geeks to weigh in here with their thoughts on this, any imput would be welcome, but I'd certainly not limit myself to purely SFB drivel, I got enough of my own drivel to compensate/substitute where cannon BS is lacking/not to my needs

Sorry Ted, but the F5 would be way too UBER for such a campaign  ;D

I mean I'm thinking of admin shuttles as coming into some serious usage as a firepower boost.

One problem I do foresee would be the need for much smaller mission maps, starting 100 clicks away with a functional combat speed of 10 would be a bit annoying IMHO.

I haven't tested the built in ECM but I did just do a test of a K-D7T vs K-D7T battle where Sensors and Scanners were set to 0 (no other changes).  No lockons.  After 10 minutes I had inflicted 30 internals (counting the SS doing 7) while taking none.  I hadn't even disabled one enemy weapon in that time.  With reduced shields the battle would have been more decisive especially with reduced power as discussed.  Even with Sensors/Scanners set to 1 lockons were normal and ECM/ECCM settings up to 5 were possible.

how could you not starcastle when your best speeds would be something like 16 with the ideas out there? eheh

I like the sound of this.  The primitive ships would be a fun challenge to try and master.  With most of the ships being ultra-low tech ships like the E4 would become highly prized.  I don't know much about the technical side of this game but I'd be willing to help out in any way I could.
