SFC2 Help
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:38:55 pm »
Hey! I tried searching for this but couldn't find the info.... so sorry if this has been covered already...

Anyway, I dusted off my copy of SFC2 the other day.... I installed and updated with the latest patch (2036 I believe)

When I start the game it goes through the intro movie just fine, but then crashes to desktop soon after or upon hitting esc to skip the movie.

I have tried disabling visual themes .... running as win95,98 and 2000.... and various resolutions for the game or my desktop...

I have tried loading it through SFC2.exe and the Starfleet2.exe with the same results.

I made sure I had the latest updates for DirectX and for my Video Card.

I am running XP home edition and I have a GeForce FX5200 Video card.

I know there is a fix for this because I did it once before.... but I have completely forgotten what it was... any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

did you try starting from the exe in the program folder? I always make a shortcut to it and never had any problems. Also  make sure to set your settings for video are to stock. That one always seemed to crash me  like youe experiencing. I suggest you get ezeini if you want to run it in a different mode. http://www.dynaverse.net/downloads.php?game=SFC2%20EAW  If this dosent help let us know and im sure someone else will have some suggestions.

Yea... I tried loading straight out of the folder... no luck... I've also tried reinstalling it a few times...

It's frustrating because I remember it being a pretty simple fix... grrrr... I hate when my computer beats me....

im  sure its something simple. If i rember corectly you shouldnt be running in compability mode. Also did you grab the correct patch? There were 2 on the dl section. The smaller one was if you were already patched  to 2033 i think it was. You  need the bigger one. Also when you reinstal  you have to make sure all the folders are deleted if not that will cause problems also.

Yep... I got the big patch.... I was trying for hours last night to get this to work... I'm no longer trying it in compability mode....

Also, I've tried running in 16bit mode.... and tried various combinations of everything I listed before... hahahaha....

I could just give up and reinstall SFC3... but then that would be letting my computer win.... and I can't do that.

LOWER THE RESOLUTION OF THE GAME.

If you're using EzINI, change it down to 640x480 (for now, just to get it running).

It should run fine.  Then gradually ramp up the resolution to see what your computer will let you do.  IIRC, you shouldn't set the resolution of SFC2 to greater than what your desktop is set.

OK.. here we go..

After installing SFC 2 EAW, patch to v 2036

If EAW created a shortcut on your desktop.. delete it

go into your Taldren\Starfleet Command II folder and find the Starfleet2.exe game file, right click and select copy

go to your desktop and in an empty area, right click and click on Paste Shortcut

Use this file to launch the game as the SFC2.exe is bugged.

on Gamespy Arcade, you will have to go under File to Options and click on Games and find Starfleet Command II and change the launch file to reflect Starfleet2.exe instead of SFC2.exe

Next, if you have a saved game before you patched, the saved game is not compatible with the patch.. you will need to delete your saved games before launching the game.. or re-installing EAW fresh and clean after you delete the Taldren game folder, then run the game patch...

If issues still occur, please post exactly what is happening.
