One might wonder how Crimmy all of the sudden has 500 bucks to blow on a laptop and at the same time remain married....

Been working 7/12's since Jan 2nd with only one day off....which I did carve a couple hours out of (again...while remaining married...) and played on the server...

 So......NYAH! :P

I always thought you had one Crim seeing as you are always on the boards and being an Electrician in wiring homes or building and such you would need one.I thought you just plugged it in to the companies phone line.Nice to hear though and you can sneak some game time some where.

Yes, I used to run a 300 MHz Celeron overclocked to 450 MHz.   Wwhat he has is more than adequate to run most applications.  Most laptops throttle down the proccessor to save power anyway, my 2GHz pentium M usually runs at 800 MHz when on AC power and 433 MHz when on baterry.

Now the 256 MB of RAM, that's something Crim should consider upgrading  :D

Sorry. I guess I have a pet peeve when it comes to Celeron CPUs. It is nice that he has the laptop though. All I have is my desktop until I get the money together to build the briefcase computer I want.

I agree K'hunt...got me one of those new toys for Christmas myself...wifey ordered it and inadvertently doubled the memory...so I have a cool gig o' memory to exercise my programs (and OP) in!
Running both it and primary machine on Celerons and humming right along!

I bought one just before Christmas as well.  The company I work for paid 1/2 (before taxes).  So far due to "unforeseen circumstances" which will last at least another month I've barely been able to play with it so it just sits there running BOINC for the SETI team.  I plan to add SFC2OP to it this weekend.

Dear Josh.....

bite me.... :P LOL

I understand it's an over clocked, decade old chip....

I also understand that it is a toy...a glorified Nintendo for me...

It's good enough for the three things I do on the net....slog three forums.....surf for ...er...bewbies( cant surf for bewbies on a Nintendo).....and play SFC...

That's it....I could really care less about anything else....

I wasnt looking for a Cray or Big blue....just something to yak on...see bewbies on....and kill Feddies on....

Without spending 2 thousand bucks...

From the reasearch I did , in the small time frame I had to get in on the deal before they were gone, I found that to buy the same damn thing with same specs and maybe a little more ram...I'd have to spend between 700.00 to 900.00 dollars...add a DVD burner and you might spend a grand....

Basicly...I got it for what it is worth...about 450 bucks...

And as tight fisted, cheap, or frugal (pick one) as I am....spending money on a luxury is pretty unheard of....(I allready have 4 actively used PC's...including my gamer desktop)...So even getting the wife to not shoot me was in itself...a small miracle... ;D (never Marry a Klingon Wife)

After having it for a few days?

At 1.6 Gig....it's a little faster than my 1.2 Gig Athlon machine(after tweaking it)

The shared Ram was a concern.....but as of yet...not an issue....

The 256 ddr ram does just fine when you strip out all the crap running in the back round....the 15" LCD screen is plenty big, bright, and clear(for bewbies)....and it runs SFC......hell...what more could one want?   *snicker*

The battery doesnt last as long as advertised  just over and hour...vs the two advertised...( but I'm still tweaking my power usage..so I'm sure I can increase it)

The laptop has yet to fail to run any software I currently own...(was worried about SFC...but it runs very smooth...)

I've had some issues in transition from the memerized keyboard I'm used to... (I'm a two finger typer) ...and I will be adding a nice optical gaming mouse for SFC...the touch pad just dont get it for fighting AI...much less a human....

So...as the cheap bastard I am...I'd recommend it as the low end entry it is....a good, solid, first buy, 450 buck (250 off) laptop....remember...my first internet PC (when I got hooked on SFC) was a Digital w/ a PII 233 .....did I say I was a cheap bastard?....

Yes...I think I did... ::)

Just an FYI. Your 1.2 GHz Athlon outperforms that Celeron by a significant margin, even when it's clocked to 1.6GHz. Clock speed is not the be all and end all.

Doesn't need to.   I bought a 2 GHz Pentium M Laptop with an NVidia 6600 graphics chip and it was a collasal waist of money.  I paid like an extra $800 for feature I raely use.  Sure it games great (used it for most of AOTK2) but I have a Desktop for that.  Crim's choice simply makes more sense if your situation allows fro you to own more than one PC.

Yes...I understand that...

My point though is that, as of now...for what I use it for....there is no noticable difference in performance that would justify spending more money...

The plan, is to hand this off to my oldest for his next year in HS and then buy up a bit (when something better comes down in price...which they allways do)

Laptop Computers May Affect Male Fertility

Best Not to Balance Them on the Lap, Study Shows By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD
on Wednesday, December 08, 2004

Dec. 8, 2004 -- Male fertility may be affected by perching laptop computers on the lap, according to a new study.

Balancing laptop computers on the lap raises the scrotum's temperature, say researchers including Yefim Sheynkin, MD, FACS, of the urology department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

About 15%-20% of couples that want to get pregnant aren't able to conceive. Many of those cases trace back to issues relating to the male. Gradually declining sperm production has been noted in recent decades, say the researchers.

Elevated scrotal temperatures have been linked to male infertility. Many factors can raise scrotal temperature, including hot baths, saunas, and tight jockey shorts.

Laptop computers may also belong on that list, say Sheynkin's team. They studied 29 healthy young men ages 21 to 35 for two, one-hour sessions in a climate-controlled room.

Participants were all similarly dressed in casual clothes. After having their body temperature taken and standing in the room for 15 minutes to adjust to the room's temperature, they sat down and were given working or nonworking laptop computers.

The researchers used two brands of Pentium 4 laptop computers. The brands aren't identified in the study, which appears in the European journal Human Reproduction.

The men balanced the computers on their laps. The researchers then removed the nonworking computers, instructing the men to hold the position for the rest of the session. Participants with working laptop computers kept the computers in place throughout the session.

The men's scrotal temperature was recorded every three minutes. The temperature on the bottom of the working computers was also monitored.

Scrotal temperature rose with the working and nonworking computers. However, the working laptops prompted a greater increase in scrotal temperature -- around a 5 degrees Fahrenheit increase (or about 2.7 degrees Celsius).

Participants without working laptops had a scrotal temperature increase of about 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.1 degrees Celsius).

Technology doesn't deserve all the blame. The position required to balance a laptop computer in the lap -- with thighs close together to balance the computers -- also increases scrotal temperature. Still, the heat generated by the laptops adds to the problem.

In the study, the bottom of the laptop computers rose from about 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) to almost 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) after an hour. Both brands had similar temperature increases.

"Working on laptop computers in a laptop position causes significant scrotal temperature elevation as a result of heat exposure and posture-related effects," say the researchers.

Is the increase enough to impair male fertility? The researchers can't say for sure. However, they note that another study showed that sperm concentration dropped by 40% when median daytime scrotal temperature rose by 1 to 2 degrees Fahrenheit (or 1 degree Celsius).

More than 60 million laptop computers are expected to be in use by 2005, with another 90 million worldwide, the researchers say. Calling for more studies, they suggest that teenage boys and young men may want to limit their use of laptop computers on their laps.
