Changing the Race List to add races to a new Map...
« on: February 05, 2006, 08:57:48 am »
For the past two days I've been trying to get my map editor for SFC III to accept new races. Namely Species 7482, and Pirates. I've changed the definitions list to match the race list in my RaceNames .gf file. As well as matching how they are listed in my defaultcore .gf file.  Nothing has worked.  How do I get my map editor to accept the new races?  Thanks.

Regards,
Fed

I think there is a definitions text file with the map editor, you have to add the races to that in the same order that they are found in the racenames.gf file.

Thanks IM, I've done that.  This is why I'm so baffeled. There must be something else I'm missing. Perhaps one of the files in MetaAssets. Thanks for the assistance.

What I'm trying to do is create a nine race map........ and not having much luck.

Even with the other races (Cardassian and Rakelli)  I've noticed the game slows. Must be the puter trying to load the the extra ships of the new races.

I didn't think SFC3 allowed for more races, just the changing of the races already there.

I've already added the Cardassians and the Rakelli and set it up as a special conquest mission. Pelican has a nine race map in his Dominion Wars Mod.  I ain't giving up yet.  ;)

Welp, still no success.........

Here's the list from the definitions file in the Map Editor folder

[Classes/Regions]
type="string"
range="array"
0="Neutral"
1="Federation"
2="Klingon"
3="Romulan"
4="Borg"
5="Species8472"
6="Cardassian"
7="Ferengi"
8="Rakellian"
9="Pirate"

Here's the list from the RaceNames file in the CommonAssets folder

[ShortEmpireNames]
0   = "Neutral"
1   = "Federation"
2   = "Klingon"
3   = "Romulan"
4   = "Borg"
5   = "Species8472"
6   = "Cardassian"
7   = "Ferengi"
8   = "Rakellian"
9   = "Pirate"

Like I say, there must be something else I'm missing.

Not sure if a complete re-install would solve this.

What is happening or better yet... what is not happening when you use these settings... You need to make sure that if you have the race in the definitions.txt file in your loadout and core files, if you make a full map...  Map making is a pain in the arse, and is not one of my favorite modding duties for sure.

Yep.

They are all there. In both DefaultCore and DefaultLoadOut.

Thanks for the post.

Ok some more areas to focus on... your Character.gf file must have valid start ships for your races, same as your ItemsRules.gf.

also check your Campaigns.mct file at the bottom

[Races]
0=0
1=1
2=2
3=3

make sure that these corespond with your races as they appear on your RaceName.gf file also.

If it works in single player skirmish mode but does not work in your D3 server kit, then it is most likely your map... make a simple 10x10 map with just one homeworld planet for each race and see if the kit loads.... also run your LogViewer when you first fire up your server, as this can help pin point your problem... also make sure you check your invalid ships file to see if you have a bum ship loadout or core.....

Let me know what it is and/or is not doing....

Can't seem to find the Campaigns.mct file.

Should it be in the Scripts/Campaigns folder?

arg... thats right... are you changing this for single player mode or Dynavers3?  Same settings changes, just in a different directory....

for single player:
Sfc3/MetaAssets/ServerProfiles/Character.gf  change your starting ships at the bottom of this document.

If you are setting up a server kit you will need to go into your server kit:
ServerKit/Assets/Scripts/Campaigns/Champaign1.mct   to make the mentioned change/check.

It took me trial and error error error, retrial and error error error... before I finaly got it originally... there are enough files interlinked settings wise, that makes it... Interesting at best, to get it done.

This map is for single player.

I'll scope that out.

Much appreciated.

   The definitions file with the map editor is only for making a new map. Once a map is made you can't add
more races to it only edit it. Too show you what I mean open a map with notepad it will list the races for that
map, don't try and edit manually you will trash the map it's in binary code when you use the editor it rewrites
 the code and not save it as a text file it still won't work have tried it myself once. The only thing I can say is
make a new map using your new definitions file and that is a pain or edit the 9 race map of Pelicans

That's the problem....... I can add the Rakelians and Cardassians, but the others don't show up on the list.  Even though the definitions file and the race names match in the race file in CommonSettings.  I did notice that the Dom Wars map list the Feds first while mine lists Neutral first.

I'll keep tinkering till I get it right.

Thanks.

Fedman are you using the stock multi map. The one all the conquest campains use. That one uses 6 races
including the Cardassians and Rakellians, thats why I'm asking. If so it won't hold more races than 6. But I'm
looking at changing that will post more when I'm sure it works ;)

I appreciate that.

I was under the impression that once I change the definitions file and it matched the short name in the race file I could use any map already made and add the other races.  As well as create a new one if so desired.

I hope you're successful.

Thanks.
