Gonna try downloading it over my painfully slow connection... I see a FreeBSD6 VM for it too! I wonder if anyone's made a QNX VM for it yet...

I look forward to the release of the GSX server for free. We just might be able to use that at Xenocorp. At a minimum it will be fun to play with!

I got as far as running VIM on minix. Its gonna take me a while to download VMware's Ubuntu "Browser Appliance" image... (~22 hours

... frickin dial-up...).

I've been hearing about it recently and been thinking about trying it out. It seems like a great way to try out different linux distros (and other OSes like one of the BSD's) before "really" installing them.

Only if you're interested, I'm going to play with it regardless. I'm playing "advent" on minix now while I wait for the Ubuntu image download... takes me back.

I've been thinking about playing around with PC-BSD, but I don't really want to clear off either Windows or Linux to try it out. This sounds like the perfect way to see just how much I like it.

My experiences with vm ware, running ms dos, and then linux while the main os is windows xp were mostly good. Do make sure your vmware emulator is the most up to available. With the ms dos, a number of commands where missing. The experiences of the teacher that was using it, is that is also an easy way for an inexperienced user to badly mess up his computer

It reminds me of a game I played on the local municpalities computers back in 1978. An IBM R2 I think it was, but it might have been a VAX..., I don't really recall as I was just a kid, but I clearly remember the green monochome terminals, the huge disk stacks under plastic sheilds and the text based game we played on it.

This might be the very same game...

Yup, using the latest VMware player release (1.0.1) I could see how an inexperienced user could mess things up using a fully functional console OS with it, but I can also see how one could create a locked down linux or windows desktop image good for kids and grandmothers to browse the web safely on without clogging your host windows installation with spyware and trojans.

I installed this last night, it works quite well.

I'd love to experiment with this app more, they have a 30-day full version trial that is very tempting.

That's true with most Linux distros, and ubuntu has a very good reputation of things working out of the box. I tried it for a while on my second hard drive, but I found out really quickly that I prefer KDE over Gnome. Then I tried kubuntu, and found out really quickly that I prefer other distros over k/ubuntu. By the way, I just ditched SUSE for Slackware today. It runs a lot better, but requires the user to become a lot more familiar with the command line, which doesn't really bother me at all. I think I'll probably stick with this distro for a while.
