GAME PROBLEM -- TECH WIZARD REQUIRED -- AFFECTS ALL? players
« on: January 31, 2006, 04:49:56 pm »
Ok I will try to explain this as best I can --

A) For the last few days I have been hearing of weapons fire not doing the proper damage they should -- the best example I can give of this is a several instances of guys saying they are firing alpha strikes at red shields and the shields don't go down -- Now me -- I haven't seen this so I chalk it up to lag --
(I now wonder if the other side is also seeing things like that happen?>)

B) Today risky and I go to GSA for a challenge match -- D7W's -- risky and I both decide to fly different then usual we stay apart and start alpha strikes at range 29 -- eventually getting to within range 22 -- after about 5 min of fire -- read below

C) problem -- risky starts to show he is doing internals to me -- I start to show that I am doing internals to risky -- each of us shows the other ship with front shields down and taking internals (supported by probes) -- however I see myself with full front shields and no internals risky has the same situation..

I requested Risky repeat this test with his fleetmates while I repeated it with slider -- again I was able to do internals on slider he was not able to do them to me -- I believe risky was able to duplicate internals for both ships which are false readings as the player he was fighting showed full shields -- at mission end *due to SD _-briefing screen showed ships with internals -

Not being a computer wiz I am wondering what is or can cause this --

Obvious possibility is lag? or is it more now -- can all the numerous changes on ship list affect the game this way??

Needless to say I am not cheating and neither is Risky -- and now that the test has been duplicated with other players we can verify its not an isolated situation --

SOOOO
Ideas
Opinions and
Solutions to fix ??

I ran the issue against 2 fleetmates. In one instance both parties were scoring these "ranged internals" in another instance only one side scored these points. One thing that we noticed was both parties reported seeing normal shields when ranges was closed to within 15 or 10 or so. So close in strikes seemed to be reporting properly, but ones at range did not.

1) Ensure neither of you are running software firewalls or anti-virus or associated programs.

2) If either of you are behind a router ensure that it is configured properly and running the latest firmware (and your lan config should make sense.) If either of you are using a wireless router, try connecting on a hardwired network to see if the problem persists.

3) Ensure you are both running the same version of directx (latest).

4) Make sure both of you are using the OP stability updates (or not).

5) check with your respective ISPs for network status announcements.

I seem to recall Risky is behind a router?

1. my side is clear
2. check
3. check, for me at least
4. am using, i assume duck is as well?
5. nothing out of the ordinary...
The router is part of the modem, haven't seen this but one other time winging toolin a base assult.
But with multiple parties seeing this, is this sign of something bigger?

It almost certainly sounds like a synch issue. Is this only between Duck and Risky?

Think this happened to TT and I vs Duck and Mini, I kept asking TT if he had his EW on, said yes but his shield was getting ripped down range 25 plus from dizzies only.

Interesting - I was getting complaints about this same thing in UAW - and I thought it was my power settings, I had never heard of this in 4.0. I suspect it may be internet lag and the transmission of data between players, as I have done a lot of single player missions, skirmishes, etc and the shields I see from a distance with a probe are the same as I see close up. In single player I don't see any lag or shields changing abruptly. I am VERY glad to hear this is not exclusive to Universe At War. In UAW, I did lower the power on the TNG era ships (late/adv eras) and it seemed better, but I still hear the occasional complaint about bad readings.

I blame Internet lag for this, and the things that Bonk mentioned as well.

I have heard of this happening with a few of my wings in KCW.  TT and Risky seem to see it most often but I am sure there have been others who have  voiced this on TS with us.  I know it happened often enough to TT due to TS eheh.  Could there be a bad setting in the weaponscharts? such as perhaps range 18-25 should read say 0 0 0 0 0 1 (damage rolls) and actually has say 0 0 0 4 0 1 ?  whereas if the roll is a 4 it does 4 damages on dizzies?(numbers are fictional, but just showing idea).  I realize lag and packet exchanges could be issues with shots actually hitting later than thought, but to actually change the hit?

Its not damage rolls(i dont think) because the other player doesnt actually take the damage on their side. As for testing, make sure you lob alot at the other player, it doesnt always show on the first few vollies.

Um... I hate to say this... but over the years I have experienced this problem once in a while....

It seems to be geared by when one race is fighting against another certain race.

I first noticed it playing Fed against Lyran.

I have noticed it also with Hydran vs Kzinti.

Also, using Fed & Hydran, I have had it happen against ISC ships.

And once when flying Lyran I had it happen against g0rn AI. (the other three examples have been against Human & AI opponents, but mainly AI)

From those examples (granted, it is mainly the races I fly the most & personal experience), I think when a race is flying against a non-traditional enemy, there is a foul up in the system....

It doesn't happen much... but only every once in a while.

Take a moment to see what race your ship should belong to and compare it to what I got....

Another note, when I have noticed this happening, the AI I am facing seems to uber powers and can drop even green shields with minimal effort.
