Would anyone actually fly in this "fun" server series?
« on: January 29, 2006, 01:00:28 pm »
I've done a couple of "fun" servers before (New Cruiser Hell, War Cruiser Hell) which though they were fun, very few people played on them.  It could have been because I can't write and installer, but the most likely scenarios is that people simply don't play on "fun" servers.

Servers without Victory conditions are like women without vaginas, kind of pointless.  Let me expand upon my idea and then let me know if this is a waste if time.

We've gone a bunch of new players (9th Fleet) and returning Dynageezers on KCW.  SFC:OP is a very complicated game to learn and newer players are going to have a hard time competing with the "Professionals" who live on the servers (note to self, must get a life).

My idea is to run a series of short servers called the "Starfleet Academy" series or something like that.   The idea behind it would be for people to be able to sign in, have fun, and learn/re-learn the game in a low-pressure enviroment.  Limit each week or so to a different "front" from the GW so people can focus on particular skills.   People should be encourraged to fly both sides like in the "hell" series (me in a K-D5L versus Sears in an F-CLC will never be forgotten :) )

Everyone remember when we'd host Newb training sessions and 9 veterans  would show up to train Risky?  Would more people show up for a "training" server than IP practice?

There are some other advantages for this type of setup.  It can give Bonk and Evil Dave a test bed for SQL and new missions.   It is better to test this stuff in a less formal environment in case it crashes and burns.

let me know if I'm out of my mind, again.

You're out of your mind. Nice idea tho, but we all know where nice ideas go.

Edit, you know, there's a 2 parter here, cuz on one hand you can have a test server using sql and such and have a serious server in one. PP is the thing that's hard to keep track of in case of a reset if the DB gets fried, but last few servers have done ship prices and such so that pp isnt a big deal. So now ur down to lost territory. Reset the DB and adjust the map hex ownership. So let it run SQL.

Second part is to have an area for Pro's and newbs alike. Setup a twin rules structure, one similar to SGO5 that applies to a certain map area vets can duke it out for VC's and another area for newbs in smaller ships with a ruleset similar to KCW...

I'd play a server like that. Something for everyone. It's the map that's the hard part. It has to make sense.

I would TRY it. If it involved helping n00bs get into the swing of things, I would make it a point to show up.

But, without VC's, without nightly strategy sessions, without epic battles...

Those things are what make people log on every night for mayhem.

It wasn't just me, there were a couple of others several of the nights. As for SQL and script testing, I'm all for that, especially if there's a few nights with some plasma. I skipped out on the server last night to try and get some on GSA but then I lost connectivity so I didn't get any...

As for creating the VCs and epic battles, might I suggest scenario maps..where Team A is to hold a point, or a base, or a supply line against an aggresssor force for a night or two, maybe even take a planet or base or etc... Space and objectives could be limited. The teams would swap after a night or two or something. At the end of each match, each team could evaluate what went wrong, what went right, where do I need firming up, etc... and hold some IP battles alongside (similar to this KCW format) for seeing how some ships handle on each front.

Nice idea, but I want to be able to log on with a chance of wing or fighting with someone. Also, having a real life puts pressure on to not play to save up browny points to play on serious servers.
