Why i Stoped making free models for Download
« on: January 30, 2006, 02:10:48 pm »
I real loved making models for all the star trek games, The Taldren model forum is the place i grew up in my work as a artist. As you know i have post some of my work with no downloads to the files, like my Star wars jedi fighter and others.

The truth is i can't trust people i don't know who will have free access to my models to do the right thing.

I have found web pages and file host with my models on them who have dropped the readme files from my model files, and even replaced them with other peoples names or their own names. This is unexceptable for me and is the reason why i cant make models and give them out for free now.
it's sad that a few Greedy people have killed the fun and Enjoyment for us, i wish it was not like this.

I'm sorry i have to do this, but i guess this is what this online world has come to, im sorry :(

Have you considered a password protected archive or installer download and distribution of the password by e-mail request? (or some similar arrangement) That way you can control who gets the files and can keep a list of who has them and what they will use them for. That way nice guys like us can still play with your cool models!  :)  Something to consider... If you'd like some technical help on such a solution I'd be more than happy to do my best for ya.

Bonk there is always a chance that there will be just one person(and i use the term lightly) will simply get the pass and then redistribute the model on his terms
...IE: removing the readme file and the credits....

And then their was a scream like no other in the universe

Is there a way to embed a credit in the .mod file itself? If not, I might be able to find a hack to acheve this.

Thought so, similarly, it would take much effort to defeat. ... Just exploring the possibilities here. I have seen enough of this complaint over the years to think that it is worth finding a way to fix the situation.

Would it?

The textures that are used on most ships are generally pretty darn close- why not have a small part of that texture that contains the info?

Or you could make a single small square that contained all that info, and simply weld it onto all the models you make. It would replace, say, one poly on a model, and all you'd need to do to include it on ALL your models is make it once, save it, and import it into every model.

I know it's not much, but if you like SKinman we could set you up a page at OutaLance. I'm pretty nuts about looking after all of the members stuff, I search the sites DAILY to see if anyone has"borrowed" so to speak anything that didn't belong to them. SO far I've stopped 3 people . ;D. Only you will have access to edit you're models and you get 20+ sets of eyes keeping an eye on your stuff.PLUS we have people in Admin positions on BC and SFC 3 it's a pretty cool deal knowing someone's got your back. Just say the word and we'll hook you up if you wish. I personally hope you do. You're one of the best modellers I've ever seen, and that's for sure. And the community would be a lesser place without your contributions.

Sorry to hear that SkinMan...your stuff is great.

Adding anything to the mesh or textures would only work for awhile...after someone was presented with the evidence of misdeeds, the info would be out very quickly. The only true way to fight it is with self-policing. If you see something credited to someone, and you know it was done by someone else, speak up. Sometimes it's a mistake, the readme was lost and the model was credited to whoever posted it; sometimes it's purposeful, and those are the ones we need to know about. Then we can find out all the places they go, and present our cases to their friends/acquaitences(sp?)...discredit them enough and they might go away. ;) ;D And yes, even if you're not a modeler/texturer, just a fan, speak up...you have more say than us actually because you ARE a fan...you know the work, but had nothing to do with the work.  :P

Unfortunately, this is often the result...a great asset to the community lost because someone couldn't be honest. And I thought most of us were adults... :(

skinman, I take it from the SW above you must be excited about that new EaW RTS game on filesnetwork?  It's only a demo...but your ships own the living daylights out of anything I've seen in their screenies so far.

ANyways,  sorrty to hear about the model troubles,  I was hoping to get my hands on your  of  your newer  trek stuff,  I think there's a shuttle or 2 u made I never got a chance  to get.  You still got them up somewhere?

Great detail. Breathtaking ships. Its a shame there is a few that try to take credit for others models. In the end they only hurt themselves as well as the enitre community. I say we tar and feather them!  Anyone could tell by looking at it who made it.

i can understand what you mean skinman.  i've found models done by mackie(AKA evil whitey), the DuctTape Wonder and numerous others listed at battleclinic under new names and with either altered readme or no read me files.  even Thu111s with his extracor program has been ripped.  to be honest though the only modeler that i have not seen ripped is Wicked Zombie but he posts a death threat in his readme's.

there you go you could put an offer that a ripper couldn't refuse in your stuff.

See my post regarding this issue here:

I have an easy to implement yet sophisticated and elegant scheme to "watermark" models, which just might do the trick.

Really, if your gonna task me at least make it a challenge.  Total time= 15 minutes. I'll double check it when I get home when I have a 3-d model proggy to run.
