 ;D

(disclaimer: this isnt an insult directed to americans in general but rather to the interesting laws that also make you print on coffee cups; "warning, the coffee is hot."  ;D ;D )

ROFFL!!!

Mackie, I am a firm believer that some dumbarse Ultra-Lib(R) in Congress is actually going to see that picture and insist that 'for our own safety' all firearms must now be equipped with such permenantly engraved warning labels.

If it had a longer barrel, it would look exactly like my .357...well, without the residue around the chambers. I actually know how to clean a firearm.  ;D

For certain people in the NE and the left coast, that warning is appropriate.  ;)

If we weren't in a sue-happy environment we wouldn't have the "Warning - Coffee may be hot"  There actually is no law on the books requiring such warnings.  One day some idiot spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee on themselves, and burned themselves.  They sued MickyD's and won, the Idiot claimed that <snip> didn't know the coffee would be hot and since there wasn't a warning declaring the coffee as such, MickyD's was responsible.  Since then all companies that put themselves in any kind of situation where an idiot could be hurt put simliar warning on all their products, to prevent themselves from losing millions to people without common sense.

 >:(  (you know why, I won't move this one though, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.)

The first memory I have of the "coffee is hot" thing is the Seinfeld episode where Kramer spills the hot coffee on himself and gets free coffee... it has a hoot!  ;D  Was that art imitating life or life imitating art? (OK, maybe Seinfeld was not really art... watching an episode the other day I noticed how dated it is already... tick, tock...)

Why? Nothing really incendiary has been said. I doubt it will turn into a flame war.

At my place, folks leave the tube on all the time, especially when they gravitate away somewhere else (for a long time).  I don't watch much TV at all, so I get oblivious to it... until there is Seinfeld on.  Then I get my leaden butt up and trudge over, and if I can't find the remote... kids... I push the off button on the set itself.  Seinfeld.  Gah!

I've noticed that no matter what time it is, you can find a law and order playing on some channel or another.

I used to like L&O, until it went all wimpy. I know very few cops like that. "I know he raped and murdered 147.5 children, but his mommy didnt breast feed him as a child. He was abused".  ::)

Of course, you don't live in New York.  I assume you're talking about SVU, because I sooo could see Lenny or that other old guy "accidentally" emptying a clip into someone like that.
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

Thats the one. SVU. The guy that took over after Lenny died should be in the mob. I dont even want to talk about Criminal Intent.

No one in their right mind lives in NYC. The smart ones commute.  ;)

You know, I thought I'd live my whole life in New York; unless you have literally megabucks, it's not too conducive to family values or even just families.

Sigh.....

Ah yes, the media had fun with this one. What idiot doesn't know coffee is hot, eh?

except "Warning: Coffee is hot!"  labels had nothing to do with this lawsuit.

Fact 1. Multiple scientific studies  were presented that showed the correlation between skin burn severity, liquid temperature, and exposure time

Fact 2. Multiple scientific studies were presented that documented human reflexive response time

Fact 3. McDonald's coffee was served a a temperature capable of producing burns BEFORE possible human response

Fact 4. Internal McDonald's documents showed corporate knowledge of prior burn incidents

Fact 5. Internal McDonald's documents showed coffee temp was specified due to business/profit concerns, not customer requests as they argued (higher brewing temp permits more coffee to be brewed from a given batch of coffee grounds, cost savings ~ 1 cent/cup)

The award in this case was punitive.  It was not "reward" for the plaintiff. It was a punishment for McDonald's intended to force a change in a practice deemed unsafe.

For me...that's good coffee.  I'm not the kind of person that can chug an entire pot in five minute.  I like to nurse the coffee, and if it drops to Luke-Warm before I can finish it, it get's thrown out because I can't stand not-hot-coffee.  The hotter the better in my opinion.

How hot is hot?

Home brewed coffee is typically 140F. The McDonald's coffee in question was 180 to 190F.
Of course, it would be boiling at about 212F.

The plainiff originally sought to settle for $20,000 (she had undergone skin grafts on 6% of her body). McDonalds refused.

Some quickly found Googled details here: http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm

You know, I think it was McDonalds coffee that bought down the world trade center! Clearly the fire wasn't hot enough to melt steel, so it must have been another heat source that did it!

lol...

Home Brewed Coffee is ok, but I tend to like it a little bit hotter than that.  More because I like it to stay hot a little while longer.  I didn't know just how hot McDonald's made thier coffee.  190F seems a bit rediculous, and they should have of course, let it cool a bit before serving it.  If someone could create a cup of coffee that would, on its own, stay at about 120-140F for an hour, I would be very happy.
