Zyxel Router won't allow to get on D2
« on: January 21, 2006, 08:18:39 pm »
Getting the Firewall message when trying to log on.

It has the 'virtual server' thing where I set up athe port forwarding, and I have all the crucial ports set.

I figure maybe I have to do the DMZ thing - but there is this Host IP field, and I don't know what that is supposed to be.

Help

The host IP for the DMZ is your LAN IP address.

If on WinXP or NT obtain this by typing "ipconfig" at a command prompt and press enter. ("ipconfig /all" will give additional info). On Win9x use Start..Run.."winipcfg".

If you enable the DMZ then disable the redundant virtual server settings. For "virtual server" or port forwarding settings to work correctly your router must support port range forwarding and your LAN IP address must be configured statically.

If your LAN IP address is automatically assigned by DHCP (the default on most routers) then be aware that your LAN IP address can change and if so, you must update your DMZ host setting to match. I'd reccomend only enabling the DMZ setting when playing anyway, so just make it a routine to check your current LAN IP address.

To configure your LAN IP address statically, check your router manual or do a search on the web. Eventually I'll get to doing a networking basics guide, but have not found the motivation or time to do so yet, though it would save me repeating myself alot.  :)

Thanks - it worked.....sort of

So I can get on the D2, get on KCW.  I can play AI missions - but I can't play with other players.  Whether I draft or they do, I just get a long countdown and then if they drafted I get dumped out, and I can't get any more missions (have to quit camp and come back) or if I drafted I will boot them out and end up in an AI mission.

Any clue?

This my first time on D2 with this router...

Does the router have a setting to allow pings from the WAN? If so, enable it.

This thing's a mess.

So under Advanced settings, there is a 'WAN' selection.

IN there I have:

WAN Port Configuration
This page is used to configure the parameters for Internet network which connects to the WAN port of your router. Here you may change the access method to static IP, DHCP, PPPoE or PPTP by click the item value of WAN Access type.

Now, for each of the above access methods, there is a bunch of different stuff - none of which includes a check box for 'allow pinging'

I tried calling Tech Support - they sent me to IPCHICKEN.COM and said that because it read my IP, then I was able to be pinged...

In other words, they were no help - I am probably asking the wrong questions, so fault is with me.

Do you have a link to your router manual (or give me the exact model #) so I can read it for you?

ZyXel P-330W

I've been on the website, www.us.zyxel.com , and could never fnd a web manual for it.  All I have at home is a Quick Start guide

Ack! When will router manufacturers ever learn? I'd bet this is becoming more prevalent because the devices are cheaper to produce than documentation for them.

I'll dig around to see what I can find.

I appears that your router has all the necessary functions (looks like a pretty good one), please read the manual in full and check this page http://www.portforward.com/ as well.

I reccomend a static LAN IP configuration - select a private IP address outside the LAN DHCP IP pool of the router, use the virtual server to port forward the directplay ports 47624TCP and 2300-2400TCP&UDP to your static LAN IP, disable UPnP and the preset triggering settings (Application Level Gateway - the one for AOE is the same as OP), disable the DoS settings if enabled.

Alternatively you can leave it as you have it set up for the DMZ, but disable the DoS settings if enabled and be aware that your DHCP assined LAN IP may change requiring you to update your DMZ setting appropriately. For security disable the DMZ when not playing.

Using port forwarding and a statlic LAN IP is the more secure option. You may also be able to leave the DoS setting on and just allow the ICMP requests, but not knowing the UDP packet frequency required for directx gameplay offhand I'd reccomend disabling the DoS settings altogether.

Read that stuff over and just give us a shout if you're still stuck.

So, I already tried the alternative option, and while that got me on the server, i couldn't engage any human players.

I tried to go the static IP route.  I set up an IP outside the DHCP IP pool - but then when I tried to set up the virtual servers to port forward to the static IP....it told me that that it wasn't a valid IP cause it was outside that range.

That manual might tell you lots....but it doesn't tell me crap :(

What's crazy is I can play Op on GSA, I can play any other game in multiplayer...but I somehow need to reprogram my damn PC to play a little D2.

Alternatively - lets say i just wanted to yank the whole damn router - how about that?  Can I just plug the cable straight from the Modem to my PC and reboot?  i only got the damn router in the first place so that I could get on the network via my work laptop's wireless card....

Oi! The router will only port forward to a dynamic IP address? That is unheard of and downright silly on the part of the router manufacturer; you'd need to change the port forwarding settings everytime the dynamic LAN IP changes... you can give it a try however... it will probably work, you'll just have to watch and see if your LAN IP changes and update the port forwarding settings when needed.

What's crazy is I can play Op on GSA, I can play any other game in multiplayer...but I somehow need to reprogram my damn PC to play a little D2.

The Dynaverse is completely different from all other modes of multiplayer gaming as you must not only be able to connect to the game server but also be able to connect to every other player on the server independently of the server, without knowing who those players might be in advance. And everyone must be be configured properly for this to work well and provide for stable gameplay.

Thats a valid option, but its probably worth messing with the router some more so you won't have to be disconnecting and reconnecting all the time.

Have patience.

In regards to your first comment:

I don't think thats exactly it.  I mean, the virtual server port points to an IP, but it is an IP w/in the range of the DHCP pool.  When setting a Static IP, I believe I can disable the DHCP (which greys out the IP Pool), but I don't know what that does.

Conversly, I can set what the IP range is of the DHCP pool...but I wasn't sure I should be messing with that.

When I set the static IP, I wasn't sure what to pick - I picked the IP my PC was using before I started using the router...There was also a 'Default Gateway' field.  The manual said if I didn't know what this was to leave it blank.

I went to the WAN settings, where I selected Static IP, and there I was able to disable UPnP.  It has a buch of other things in there too... Clone MAC address, and 3 different DNS things.

Considering the DMZ route doesn't let me connect to players, Static IP seems to be the only way....but with this router, there seems to be a host of switches I need to flip and other junk and I must be getting it stuff wrong...

Oi, I'm sorry but I have not yet filled in my Networking Basics thread in Engineering, but it looks like I will have to soon as these kinds of questions keep reoccuring.

Did you read the pages at portforward.com? In particular: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm
and this meay help your understanding as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_IP_address

If you want to try port forwarding to a static lan IP again, then use a private IP adress like 192.168.1.100 not "the IP my PC was using before I started using the router" and use the LAN ip of the router as your gateway address, netmask 255.255.255.0 and the DNS servers as displayed by the WAN status info on the router.

Until you get that stuff figured out its probably just best to bypass the router and connect directly through the cable modem when you want to play on the Dynaverse for now.

Well, figured out the static IP bit.  The good new was it enabled me to get on D2 w/o doing the DMZ thing.

Bad news is I STILL can't connect to other players in game.

I bypassed the router and rebooted - couldn't get connectivity.  Something else I have to reset?

To bypass the router you must release the WAN DHCP lease from the router and reset your client PC to dynamic IP address settings. Power the works down and then connect direct to the modem.
