PM me your IP address as you see it. (or just PM me the full text of an "ipconfig /all", you can right click and mark then copy from a command prompt window). I will compare this to what I see from outside.

The dynaverse server IP should not matter. If your ISP is asking I can PM you the info.

What make of modem do you have? I take it it is ADSL? What is the model?

Yup, you have a private IP address... 192.168.x.x  (don't worry its safe to post a private IP address):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_IP_address

And the SpeedStream 4100 modem, I've been through that beast with others here before. Gimmie a bit to recall/dig up what I can...

Your ISP has done something strange with your DNS suffix (or have you set that?), if it is not used it usually is just left blank...

I wish I'd asked this earlier... Doh! We could have saved some pain.

Siemens is not forthcoming with any manuals or detailed info on the Speedtream, I suspect they will only provide this info to an ISP.

Lemme dig for a while...

I wonder how you've been connecting to the server at all!  :o

Check this page out:

http://www.netfaqs.com/windows/DSL/config/speedstream4100/advanced/index.asp

The speedstream defaults to a LAN DHCP lease of 10 minutes!!! WTF are they thinking? (this might explain a lot...)

I do not see any port forwarding options but note the option that allows you to assign the public IP address to the local LAN adapter.

Try enabling that and set the DHCP least time to one day.

Once complete, check your IP address (ipconfig) and hopefully it will be a public IP address. (not in the ranges listed in that wikipedia article). It should be in the range 69.224.0.0 - 69.239.255.255 for your ISP.

I set the DHCp to at least 1 day and restarted. It had no effect. :(

The option to assign the public IP address to the local LAN adapter was on by default.

The netfaq insructs changing the Protocol to PPPoA. However, when I do this, I lose my connection to the internet and nothing helps untill I set it back to PPPoE.

I did find something called IP address and IP gateway on the modem page. Maybe there is a program that will make the server see that address?

Thank you for you help. :)

Contact you ISP and explain you need a real IP, not an internal one for gaming, and see what they say.  This cannot be first time this has happened to them.

A possible solution, but I already called them asking if they block any ports and got nowhere. I get the impression that they (tech support) know less than I do about computers.

I did find these pages:

http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-2k.htm

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Siemens/4100/PC_Anywhere.htm

Maybe they will help. I am confused about what static ip address to enter.

Other ideas:

I notice DHCP is not enabled, maybe chnaging that would help, but I don't know how.

Also, maybe some network protocol is not intalled, I only have the bacis TCP/IP installed.

Only the TCP/IP protocol is necessary.

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Siemens/4100/PC_Anywhere.htm

That page looks promising. But note your router is setup on the 192.168.x.x private addresses, not the 10.0.x.x range.

Does the DHCP setting pertain to the WAN or the LAN? (if disabled and you're on PPPoE then it probably refers to the WAN)

If your router config looks like that (third version of the 4100 config I've seen  ::)), then disable UPnP, enable WAN pings on the firewall, and port forward the directplay ports 47624-47624 TCP and 2300-2400 TCP&UDP to your private LAN IP address.

The UPnP feature probably explains how you've been able to login, but its function is obviously incomplete.

To configure your LAN IP statically, the instructions on http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm are appropriate. The trick is you'll want to disable DHCP on the LAN (assuming you're the only PC depending on it) get the WAN info from the router. (the DNS servers) and then set your LAN IP address to 192.168.1.64. Or you could leave the LAN DHCP server enabled and set your static IP to a address outside its set range, 192.168.1.100 perhaps, set the netmask to 255.255.255.0, the gateway to 192.168.0.1 and the DNS servers to the ones indicated on the router staus page for the WAN side (though setting the DNS servers to router/gateway may also work)

The page I get is what you found on netfaq. I have called SBC and it appears that they changed the Siemens (usefull inteface) to their own (useless interface). Moreover, they cannot change my IP address to static based on my account type, whatever that means.

I already followed the instructions static IP page, it does nothing.  :(

Only two ideas remain. There is an option to setup the modem for remote access, if that might help.

Or maybe somesort of second party port forwarding software.

LOL, by the time this is sorted out the Klingon Civil War will be over.

As I expected from the LAN IP adresses. In which case you do not have control over the router, no port forwarding or DMZ settings available (ie NAT capabilities). There are hacks to overcome this but if discovered by your ISP would likely result in discontinuation of service.

Moreover, they cannot change my IP address to static based on my account type, whatever that means.

That means you have not paid for a business account, usually the account type which ISPs will provide a static public IP address. But you are confusing LAN (private) and WAN (public) static IP addresses. You can configure a static LAN IP as you described but it will achieve nothing unless you have control over the router.

I already followed the instructions static IP page, it does nothing.  :(

As mentioned above, yes, this will achieve nothing unless you can control the router.

Only two ideas remain. There is an option to setup the modem for remote access, if that might help.

LOL, by the time this is sorted out the Klingon Civil War will be over.

It might be worth my taking a look at the remote access but I think we have been through all the options and it would be difficult to schedule.

There is no "second party port forwarding software" to do such a job, an equivalent option is to hack the firmware of your modem/router and replace it, usually over tFTP, but I do not recomend this, as it is not really legal.

At this point I reccomend that you change ISPs. Cable is far superior to ADSL in many respects. If you do, tell your old ISP why you left them and maybe someday they will change their silly ways and provide future customers real service, saving them pains like this.

edit: alternatively, you could purchase your own fully functional Speedstream 4100/5200 to connect to their network, which may or may not work.
