While I'm always happy when a new Trek game comes out, STO gets mixed emotions from me. While it'll be great to have an even larger, more advanced online multiplayer experience than most other Trek games can provide currently, I don't however like the pay-to-play concept that will be with STO.
I know pay-to-play offers the means for almost limitless expansion for the game, and gives the game a possibly long life span, again with constant updates, but it excludes those who can't afford to pay for it. If you save up enough money to buy a game, it gives the consumer a great feeling to know that they won't have to keep dishing out the money to play. If you have the cash to pay for the time you'll spend playing with the game, great. But for those who can't, myself included, it sucks.
Personally, regardless of how good the game is, unless the subscription fee is like 5-10 bucks a month at most, it's just not worth playing. I'm aware of payment packages for EVE that allow you to pay for a few months, 6 months, or a year at a time. If the packages are reasonably priced, then I think STO will be a game that the entire Trek gaming community will enjoy.
Regardless of whether or not STO will be a success, this much is certain. Games like Armada, BC, and SFC won't suddenly find themselves lost in time, so that gives me some comfort.
