Please help - I've lost my Sound in SFC OP!
« on: December 31, 2005, 10:03:05 pm »
Today when I tried to run SFC OP from my computer, I experienced the oddest thing:  I can't get the sound to work in the game anymore.  It makes no sense to me, and maybe some one can help.

The sound still works fine for the computer generally:  I can play the music that's in the computer, as well as hear the Microsoft windows come up when the computer starts up.  The game itself plays fine, except no sound.

I've tried the following:

1.  Removed the sound card and replaced it with another one.  No difference.
2.  Totally uninstalled SFC OP and then reinstalled it.  No difference.
3.  Upgraded the DirectX from 8.0 to 8.1.  No difference,  (The computer uses Windows 98SE, so I was concerned about using DirectX 9 - not sure if I'd have problems or not).
4.  Checked the audio out plug and wires carefully to make certain they were connected properly.

Other than wiping the computer, I'm not sure what else to try.  SFC OP is the ONLY game on this computer.

Any helpful hints would be most appreciated.

Peace and Happy New Year!

DX 9 Should work OK.

When you removed OP, did you delete the Taldren Folder in Program Files?

Yes.  I did delete the Taldren folder.  Good thought.

You didn't turn the master volume slider off in game by any chance? You can access that control while running a mission.

I'll bet it was one of the .ini files, you know, the ones in which you can set some of the game defaults.

Thanks guys for the thoughts.  I tried the sfc.ini file, but it was OK also.  I also reviewed the master volume file, but it was OK.

I ended up wiping the C: drive (I keep data partitioned on the D drive mostly) and reinstalled.  Took care of the problem.  Odd though, I couldn't figure out why it happened.

Thanks so much for the thoughts everyone.

Hey, Kid (man, sounds like I'm addressing Willie Mays)

I just had one of my rare thoughts... and too late, I'm afraid:

if it happens again, check the sound drivers in Windows.  I think if you install music players, CD or DVD players, etc., they sometimes conflict with, corrupt, or overwrite sound related drivers.

I fear you may not have had to wipe your HD clean.

Well then if this is the case how do you get sound back in SFC:OP...?

I've had the same problem...I'm sure it is either what you suggested a overwritten sound file of some sort, or a conflict or issue in the registry?

Any help...Other than wiping the HD?

You might try what others have told me for related problems with SFC1- make a second installation of OP, copy the sound files and paste in your original installation, then delete the new installation.

Maybe the sound files directory in a package would be a good download for someone to put together, if the problem is as common as all that.

Is Starfleet Universe still getting updated regularly?

That would be an excellent place for stuff like that.

You might try what others have told me for related problems with SFC1- make a second installation of OP, copy the sound files and paste in your original installation, then delete the new installation.

I will try this...

Also, I did some digging in the SFC:OP folder, and found the sound files, and they appear to be in some form of archive format...IE ZIP, or RAR....at least its telling me they are RAR files...do they have to be unarchived to work? Are there sub folders of wave files?   Can someone check their OP directory for sound files?  And tell me what they find?

Thanks
