Need Help with Roof
« on: January 04, 2006, 03:15:57 pm »
I realize this isn't a computer or cell phone related problem but I'm not sure who to ask at this point.  Yesterday we found water dripping into one of the bedrooms in our house.  I went up and looked there is a air vent up in that general area, but I couldn't find anything wrong.  I'm guessing that snow got into the air duct somehow because it hasn't leaked since.  However I'm not sure how to prevent that from happening again.  I used to work for a roofing company back in college so I'm not totally dumb in this area.  But I look at what is going on up there and I'm out of ideas, anyone have any suggestions??  Thank your for your time.

I'm sure you checked the Area above the duct for water damage, IE the roof in the attic, I'm assuming It's the attic that the duct work goes through. It might be a simple Patch job If you can find the leak, however, with It being in the duct work, You could always go about 2' on either side of where the Snow built up, and replace that area.

Who know's it might be Frozen condenzation also, depending on the weather in your area, But I kind doubt that, since you'ld have been running the air during a freeze.

A lot of the time people think the roof is leaking and it turns out to be a pipe or the air conditioner drain pain in the attic.  Have you gone up there and looked around?

Also, you might have to peel away the insulation over the spot and see if it's a drip there, or if it's running from somewhere else and that's just where the drywall finally let it soak through.

This house doesn't have an attic, it is an old farm house.  When I said air duct, I was thinking breather for the roof there is no air conditioner sitting up there, sorry for the confusion.  Even with all the rain in the last day and a half the roof hasn't leaked since.  I'm starting to wonder if some snow/ice fell into the breather and melted.  I'm going to go take another look when all this rain stops.  The first time I went out on the roof, everything looked fine, the roof was completely redone about four years ago.  With everything looking basically like new, and water leaking below I'm left scratching my head.  Thanks again everyone.
