Question on MS Update ??

Twice with-in the past month I've gotten an update from MS saying my "Virtual Memory" was being updated.... :huh:

Does this mean I MB need more memory ?   I have 512 now everything runs fine and I've noticed no problems what-so-ever running anything.... :huh:

Where and when are you getting this message?  Is it a pop-up that stays up like Windows Messenger Service?  (if it is, you should turn off the WMS and ignore it 'cause it's spam.)

Are you seeing it when you go to the MS Windows Update site?  If so, that would be really weird.

Is it something that pops up saying something about Windows resizing your Vitural Memory Swap file and then goes away by itself?  If so, while unusual, I wouldn't worry about it.  You can adjust your swap file settings to a static file or just ignore it.

I have WMS turned off at all times.... There's a little Icon that shows up in my tray, then after a min or two it disappears.....

It says I'm low on Virtual Memory and it is increasing the capability, just strange never had it before. I've run my AV and spyware programs and nothing bad shows up.

Just wanted to check with you guys that know more than myself to find out if I had a problem.

random thought:  It could be a sign of a stick of ram close to failing.

I cant think of anything else off the top of my head that would make Windows run low on VM if set to use as much/little as needed.

How much space left on your hard disk? Is a defrag required? Do a full scandisk with surface checking before defragmenting.

Next time this happens:
Do a start..run.."taskmgr" ...
On the performance tab what does it say in the "PF Usage" display? How much physical memory is available?
On the Processes tab, click the top of the "Mem Usage" column to sort by memory usage, are there any memory hogs?
While on the processes tab, click "Select Columns" under the "View" menu, check the options as in the atached image. Sort by peak memory usage, is anything misbehaving? Check "Show processes from all users". Any unrecognsed users? What are the "Commit Charge" numbers in the status bar?

Tell me you're not running Norton...

It appears that you have a trojan/virus running in the processes there.

one of the buggers to get out as well...as it looks like it's one of the multiple groups which changes it's appearance when you try to delete it...

And "NO" norton.... I followed the advice on this forum about that a while back and deleted it all, and got "Panda" I love it !   ;D

Go to control panel, system, click on the "Advanced" Tab, under the performance listing, click on "Settings", click on advanced again, under virtual memory click on "Change", this should bring up your virtual memory managment screen. Click on the hard drive where your primary page file is located, should be C:

Select "System managed Size" radio button, then click on "Set", then click on ok.

You'll have to restart.

Done and Done.... Now would someone explain, I saw that I had 342 mb for the memory and it said it could go to 768 or something. I clicked on the system one like you said. But I don't understand why this has happened anyway, has never occurred before with any of my other comp's either.

So does this mean my machine is ok and I haven't screwed it up somehow or gotten any kind of bug or anything ??

BTW/ 1+ for everone I really appreciate the help you guys give !

Why wouldn't it be better to have a static sized swap file?  If you let windows manage the swap file, increasing and decreasing it according to the need, wouldn't it become fragmented?

I don't think fragmentation is a problem, but a static swap file is always better than a dynamic one.  Even better would be a static swap file on a seperate partition from your O/S system drive, and even better than that would be a static file on a completely seperate HDD.
