Anything that can export to .3ds, .lwo, .obj, or .cob I've seen converted over to .MOD by the group.. and I've done all four formats personally.  (Plus others).  .md3 has been done a couple of times as well with non-complex meshes.  The main thing is, if you can get it into .3ds, almost anyone can convert this out to .MOD for you with minimum effort.

But if you're using Linux, why not make up a LiveCD of something like Xandros that has good Wine support in it, and then run it and convert what you need yourself?  That's the way that I'd go.. :)
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

I don't know if you can legally make a Xandros liveCD since Xandros isn't free (as in speech).  Besides, I have found Crossover Office in Xandros to be very iffy and I never managed to get 3ds max to work in it for the couple of weeks I had it on my computer.

You can do all of the model and texture work in Linux or a similar non-Windows OS with Open Source software like Blender and the GIMP, but I think you're either going to have to dual-boot into Windows or have a seperate Windows machine to convert the models to .mod with something like 3ds max or Milkshape 3D.

By the way, do you know of a good guide to learning Blender for someone who as used nothing but 3ds max?  I tried switching to Linux as my main OS earlier this fall, but I had to go back to Windows because of my 3D graphics project.

I would highly recommend you start learning how to use 3ds max 5 since that's the best program you have listed that can directly export models to .mod format for in-game use.  The program should have come with several tutorials.  Follow them and they will teach you everything you need to know.
