Kushan model request
« on: November 28, 2005, 02:52:55 pm »
Okay, is anyone willing to make a low-res version of the Kushan Avatar-Class heavy cruiser from scratch for SFC2/OP?

It's somewhere between LC/HC size in SFC2 I think.

Actually, it's about twice the length of the stock FBB...  ;)  1285.89 meters to be exact, well up into the D'Deridex-class Warbird area...  ;D

Okay, I WISH it were somewhere between LC or HC, or as big as an HC in SFC2.  It only has a 100-something crew. The connie had about 450.

That's alot of basketball courts on that thar ship.

Crew numbers in Homeworld are highly speculative, IMO.  I don't recall ever seeing anything "canon" that listed them; there was something for HW2 that suggested a frigate only carried about 25, but I could never quite bring myself to believe that (or most of the rest of HW2, for that matter, but that's another story ;D ).

Which is not to say that you can't scale the ship whatever the heck size you want.  ;)  I've just spent too long thinking about HW ships as these big monstrosities not to point that out...

You know somebody, if people were interested, I should have CommanderJones work up some quick-and-dirty illum maps for his Raider ships and put them out there for SFC...  :)

Another big problem with Homeworld models is the fact that the turrets can't move in SFC. While it's cool to sub in the Hiigarans in place of, say, the Orions, the fact that HW ships don't have shields, run on armor, and are primarily armed with kinetic weapons makes them nothing more than gigantic targets.

And on HW ships- it seems scales were switched around from HW1 to HW2. For example; HW2 fighters are the size of HW1 corvettes. Destroyers seem significantly larger, and the Battlecruisers seem to be the largest combat warships built in the HW universe (Sajuuk and the T-Mat motherships being the obvious exceptions).

My theory is that the overall scale of the game was scaled down roughly 2/3 for HW2.  (Based on comparison of the motherships)  I can only presume this was because of engine limitations of some sort.  There are those who think that this may mean that the unit sizes we've been interpreting as "meters" in HW1 were actually "feet" (which would make the Kushan Heavy Cruiser only 390-ish meters, still bigger than a Connie though ;) ), but I don't buy into that one personally, again based on mothership size--making the HW1 MS only 2 klicks tall rather than 7 doesn't work for me, given that they're shoving 600,000 or so Kushan-sicles into the thing.  ;D

Also, it's long been accepted as "fact" that fighters and corvettes were scaled up in HW1, to make them more visible.  (Maybe this also has something to do with why they scaled things down for HW2, I dunno--trying to second-guess what the guys who made HW2 were thinking, and what Sierra would let them do with what they were thinking, or indeed what they or Sierra would let them think is about as impossible as reconciling ENT as a prequel to TOS.  ;) )

BTW, This post is offered is evidence that I can drag threads that are almost entirely unrelated to Star Trek off-topic with fanboy trivia just as easily as Star Trek ones.   ::)

The turrets, I think, can probably be faked with proper hardpoint and arc placement.  It won't look as cool, but it could probably come close.  I'd be glad to help with that if the model could actually get made.  And, just to show that I'm trying to help, I'd be willing to provide a converted-to-.3ds version of the stock HW model (assuming I can convert that properly, but I should be able to) as reference if anybody wanted to try and make a new one.  :)

Well, I was going by the data on the Homeworld Unit Viewer.  Which is pretty decently detailed when it comes to the ships.  I think.

What I mean is when I run HW2 it slows down a LOT.  I don't have a great system.

I also came here for info.
