how hard is it to put fog lights on cars that dont have them
« on: November 27, 2005, 03:47:58 pm »
Im surprised at how many base model cars don't come with them allready,as I would think that should be included as it's a safty feature. But anyway like the tital say's how hard would it be to add them afterwords, and im talking about most of the new compact- subcompact 06 cars base models that dont have them allready.

It's pretty simple Khalee- find a nice set of light you like and that look good on your car and make sure they have a relay kit in with it...if not you can pick one of those up extra. This will give you full directions to wire it up plus they will only be two wires running in to the switch (power and ground).
If you have any more questions I'll see what I can dig up!

My only question is whether such a car, one that doesn't have them pre-built-in, has a battery/alternator that can handle the addition of more electrical load.

They're just lights.  Unless you plan on mounting 1,000,000-candlepower floodlamps as foglights you should be fine with your stock alternator.

Even in a subcompact.

K, the base model Camry LE does not come with one, so to save a bundle I'm going to wait until someone else wrecks an SE, then buy their front bumper with the lights already on them. Even if it's a different color, you would be surprised at how inexpensive good paint jobs are. They can match the car's paint perfectly.

Having driven through more than my share of fog, in two diffferent cars with factory equipped lights, I can honestly say that foglights are a vanity item and add nothing to safe driving in fog.
If you do install them yourself, make sure you align them properly. Nothing like coming across a dipwad who has foglights set up like highbeams (which is really, really useless in fog).

Yes, but those foglights on the bumper underneath the main headlamps look sooo cool!  ;D

Ya, so does the truck or jeep with 6 more lights on the roll bar... but it sure sucks if you are the poor bastard driving the opposite way...
Hmmm, wonder if I could mount an old B-29 remote controlled gun turret on a kia wagon... twin .50's would make my night driving much more pleasant...

Extra lights + extra wires + extra power supply. Not difficult at all :P

My Echo has the brightest low-beams of any car on the road.  You'd be amazed at how many times I get blinked by people that want me to turn my brights off.  Then I turn them on and they figure it out quick ;D   My brights will pick up a small streetname sign from half a mile ;D

I had a buddy, who's dad retired as a mechanic for NWA (Northwest airlines). Back in the 80's you did NOT want to be behind this guy with your brights on. He finally said enough is enough, and guess what his dad had in the garage? Yup, an aircraft light! He did some jury rigging and mounted that thing in his back panel (Not permanent), and boy, did it light up the rear! Not only was the back windshield hot just for a few seconds of being turned on, you could see the battery guage going down as there was no way in Hades a car alternator was going to keep that thing lit on it's own.

I never did ask Marc if he used it on the road, I imagine if his dad found out it was rigged in his son's car, I might have been minus one good friend from the early 80's.  ;)

Yeah, I've seen those spotlights myself, I imagine they come in handy when some arsehole is driving behind you all the time with his/her brights on.  ;)

Hi beams on cars should be done away with as most dont know how to use them correctly, and cant judge distance either, and dont care that they are blinding you either.

I love it when one headlight burns out, so they just use the brights instead. That's what happend when most people who use their brights...one regular headlight is burned out and they don't want to get pulled over.

At least your police still care about stuff like that. I've seen many dumbarses with a headlight burned out or their turn signal light or brake light.  >:(

I've seen pickups pulling 30 ft. utility trailers with no lights on the trailer whatsoever at night.
