There's a Zoo in Central Park???
« on: November 25, 2005, 08:07:29 pm »
Never actually made it to central park when I've been to New York.  Other locations but never there (I've heard that it was unsafe for people).  We recently watched Madagascar (the animated movie) and it showed a Zoo in Central Park?  Does Central Park in NY have a Zoo?  If so how like the movie is it?

Yup, for quite some time now. Not a very big zoo, but it's there.

No idea. If you're curious I'm sure there is a central park zoo website.

thanks, that led me to other sites and another map

http://nyzoosandaquarium.com/media/file/Centralparkzoomap05.pdf

From that I'd be guessing they got rid of the Lions, and other animals depicted in the movie, similarly to how the movie states they did, though then in 1984? (when they changed it from zoo to wildlife conservatory thing) instead of the present

First, the Park is fine even after sundown, if you stay away from the northern, or Harlem end of the Park, and/or if you are with a medium sized group.

Second, there is a tropical rainforest exhibit in the Central Park Zoo you might enjoy, especially this time of year: you go in and it warm and humid and the birds fly free!  You move (helically) around it on the periphery and it's just beautiful.

Third, then go and have a great dinner in Manhattan... on foot!

Yes. I must say that San Diego has the best zoo I've ever been to.

CP Zoo is nice day or night.

Unless you're playing Parasite Eve, but that is neither here nor there.

If you ever get down into the Carolinas, check out the NC Zoo.  It was oen fo the first "open range" zoos where they try to keep the animals in settings similar to their natural habitat.

http://www.nczoo.org/

Located about 75 miles west of Raleigh in Asheboro, the North Carolina Zoo is nationally recognized as one of the nation's finest zoos. It was the first American zoo designed from its inception around the "natural habitat" philosophy--presenting animals and plants in exhibits that closely resemble the habitats in which they would be found in the wild.
The zoo's animal collections includes about 1,100 speciemens representing about 250 different species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Among the most popular exhibits are those that display polar bears, sea lions, river otters, alligators, elephants, gorillas, baboons, rhinoceros, giraffes, and zebras. The 37-acre African Plains exhibit alone is as large a many entire zoos. The Sonora Desert, an indoor recreation of the famous desert of the American Southwest, is alive with fascinating denizens of that hot, dry climate. The N.C. Zoo is the nation's largest walk-through natural-habitat zoo. Its African and North American exhibit regions span more than 500 acres with more than five miles of walkways. Use our calendar of events, animal finder, rss news feed, photo gallery and photo tour to plan your visit to the North Carolina Zoo. Watch a live animal cam, discover great animal facts, conservation tips, special content for kids and translated information en Espanol. At N.C. Zoo, you will see some of the world’s rarest wildlife. New at N.C. Zoo is the Australian Walkabout, a habitat for animals from down under."
