Almost <snicker> have a mao done, think I've got the general idea of what to do with all the settings.
just looking for a day now where I can get the time..

1)if I set up a server and run it from my system, can I log in from D2 onto it? Or do I have to set up
a second computer through a router? (which will delay my testing even further...)

2) Since the "server stuff for dummies" list is for SFC2, do I HAVE to do anything with pirates?
Can I ignore the cartel & pirate layer altogether?

3) Every race needs one ally correct?

for the pirates, find a nice corner..and give one hex to one group, 2 to the next and so on in order not to get the news spam issue..or thats what they tell me

You can login from the same machine but it is not reccomended, as both applications have a heavy CPU load. It is preferable to run a second machine and either use a router and forward the client ports to the client and server ports to the server or get two public IP addresses from your ISP and use a dumb hub or switch instead of a router. If using a router you cannot draft (the server sees your local IP address) but can be drafted..

And risky has it right you must add pirate hexes to prevent news spam. In fact, no two cartels or empires should have the same economy (or very close) or you'll get news spam.

I'm also considering doing what Hexx is up to (two computers, two IPs if I can manage, router, etc).  Could you give me access to these threads too Bonk?  It wouldn't be for anything soon, not even home yet   but it's been on my mind most of the summer and I'm about to get the hardware I need to make the idea a possible reality.

I mean really, the guys who normally do these things need a break

Hexx, you are so behind the curve... There are SO many little tricks that add up to a lousy server if you dont know them all. Inflicting the playerbase with a bad campaign cant be allowed.

I'll help you, but there's a catch. Whatever we discuss on TS, you have to document what you learn so others that follow will have a clue.

Won't be until sometime next week though, I'm still looking at the basic stuff
Will likley pick up a router tomorrow, then (maybe) see if I can get something to run
Fridayish, then hopefully by Monday or tuesday I'll be competent enough to start
learning the tweaks I'll need & what I need to avoid doing.

Then someday... the server that DH lives in mortal fear of will be ready...
