Difficulties connecting to some people
« on: November 15, 2005, 08:05:17 pm »
Hey,

This is happening to me in GSA lately with certain people, and I wondered if some in Dyna deal with it also.  And if anyone has found a fix or workaround.

When connecting to some people, in the game room (In OP NOT in GSA; where one selects a ship), to certain poeple I see no ping, and other poeples pings are jumpy.  Later on the other person will drop from my screen.

Here is where I imagine if it happens to those in Dyna, this part is the same:

I don't see the other person, but others with no troubles do.  Still though, we can not se each others chats.  After a few minutes, or when the first shot is fired, both people drop, and thier games crash to desktop.

I have tried:

Turning off all firewalls.
I have a router yes.  I have tried disabling its firewall.
Currently I have prot forwarding set for all ports related to GSA, OP, ect set to go to my computer.

So far nothing works, and in all the rest of games everything is spotless.

I have been asking those people to try the stability updater, but so far I don't think any of them have.  Maybe it would have an affect.

Well let me know anyone's experiences.

Thanks!

Strat

Are you allowing pings?

Yes.

To 95% of all people I connect to, pings are successful. I connect to them fine. Its a select few this happens with. I will try to find one of these people to try to ping outside the game.

Even so, what would cause a ping to fail with only certain people and not most others?

Thanks!

Thanks,

I was kind of hopnig it was me.  As rare as it is, seem the problem only occures whith people who don't reall care enough to fix it.   No biggie, they don't want to fix it?  Then I won't playu with them.  Problem is sometimes theres a room full and they'd rather nboot me than the other person! HA!

Its turning out to be a bigger burden for me than others.  So long story short: I was hoping there was a fix I could just do myself.

 :o

I can't wait for the next Dyna!  No more GSA troubles!

I wish... the same problem exists on Dynaverse servers. The bugged missions that result end up in a fouled database that bogs down the server and requires daily cleanings.  :(

Well then I'm all for assisting in finding the root cause.

I just need cooperation from someone else with same problems!  lol

EDIT

But I guess the answer is basically its a known bug and theree is no resolution.

No, the answer is no software firewalls but unfortunately people refuse to believe that. Or they are just too paranoid or do too much porn/mp3/appz browsing thus drawing the kind of negative attention that requires a firewall...  ::)

Well you say no Software Firewalls.  Could you be more specific?

For example, I have a firewall on my computer and a router.  (Note: I've tried turing off both for the problem I'v been describing with no change)

I'm assuming the firewall I have running on Windows is a Software Firewall, but do you mean also for the router?  It does run on Linux...

I mean no firewalls of any kind forall players concerned. NAT if necessary (my linksys router runs Vxworks as an OS and performs NAT but no firewall functions). Unfortuntely it seems very unlikely that this will ever happen. People are just too paranoid. (and run way too much P2P crap and porn browsing and...)

If you cannot be pinged from the command prompt then you should not be playing.

How can you be pinged from behind the NAT?

Don't be silly, there is no such thing as too much porn
Who'd thunk that Star-castling was the root of all evil . . .

How can you be pinged from behind the NAT?

Your public IP address must be pingable.

Ok.

I'll try to get a hold of one of these people and see if we can ping one another.

I'll let you know the results.

Thanks!

Ok...then it's not you...(at least the directX version)

Dave ferrel documented a conflict in direct X versions...if other players are using an older version "8.0'... I think...it wont play well with newer versions.. and can mimic other known SFC connection problems...drops....bugged starts...no connect...etc...

It's possible it's another problem altogether...but I thought I'd ask.......

Next time you have problems...check with the other player to see what version of DirectX they have...it could be them...

I'm starting to agree with you guys.

I've done everything I can do.

Unless these guys try to help me find out whats causing the problem, I just have to assume its them.

Oh well, such is life.  Thanks for the help.

Last guy I usually have a problem with mysteriously connected without any troubles! lol.
